The Superbowl -

The Superbowl has come and gone.  What a game it was!   Most people thought that by half-time the winner was pretty much already decided.   The Titans fought their way back and although they lost they made an incredible attempt to tie it up. Beautiful game! One of the best in Superbowl history!

Too bad the commercials weren't as interesting as the game.   Typically the Superbowl is the best time of the year for commercials. Instead of getting up to get another beer or go to the bathroom we usually stay glued to the television waiting to laugh our butts off at the ingenious new commercials those witty advertising companies have created.  Unfortunately, this year was a major let-down.   There were only a handful of commercials that were even remotely good.

Our original plan was to list each commercial and rate them.   However, with too few good ones we decided to only list the ones we like and mention a few of the others.

EDS.com Cat herding.  Instead of driving herds of cows across the dusty plains these cowboys herd cats. They explain the difficulty of herding thousands of cats and show some of their scars.  Extremely funny and very original.   Definitely the best commercial shown during the Superbowl.
NUVEEN.com A truly touching and heartwarming commercial. They mention some amazing accomplishments in spinal cord surgery in the near future (among other things). The touching part comes when, thanks to some nifty computer generation, Christopher Reeve (aka Superman) comes walking out on his own two legs. I just about had a tear.

7-UP A follow up to the mildly humorous "Make 7...Up Yours" commercial this one is a lot funnier. After asking people to "Show us your can" the guy going through the pictures sent in is visually abused with images of the fleshy bottoms of some less than attractive looking people.
Bud Light A guy carrying a six pack of Bud-Light tries to hold the elevator door using the hand carrying the bottles. The door remains closed and he can hear the bottle tops being opened as the elevator passengers begin drinking his beer. To top it off, after complaining to them they press one of the buttons and the guy is slammed repeatedly into the ceiling. Not extremely funny but not bad.
Mountain Dew Using a remake of an old Queen song, Mountain Dew cans are thrown at groups of people, are missed, and are caught by the group singing the song.   You'd have to see it to understand it but it was pretty funny.

Budweiser Rex the dog actor is not doing his lines correctly.  For inspiration and motivation the dog recalls one of the saddest moments of his life.   He is laying in his yard and the Budweiser truck drives by it.  He chases it, jumps over the hedgebush at the end of the yard and smacks into the side of a van.
Charles Schwab They use several retired sports players. They look quite pathetic. Quite funny though.
Budweiser This one is a bit of a heartwarmer.  A guy called away from a fancy party drives to a farm, walks into a stable and delivers a horse. You then see that he actually delivered a Clydesdale. Touching.

Pet Smart A gloved puppet sings a sad song about being left alone.
Budweiser I also liked the guy called away from a black-tie party to deliver a Clydesdale.

Additional Comments:

The Superbowl commercials sucked and sucked hard. This years commercials were a severe let down. Ya know! These days, people watch the Superbowl for the commercials almost as much as the game, well almost. Anyway, it doesn't appear that anyone put forth any effort. You'd think for two million a pop, they would have sprang for a little more creativity.  This years commercials were on a scale of everyday commercials, the only real winner here was the internet. Geez, does anyone know what half the product was. All this did for me was remind me how bland and boring the computer geeks of today are.

The rest of the commercials aren't even worth mentioning. Except perhaps for the worst of the bunch.  Without a doubt it was WebMD one.  They showed Mohammed Ali but it was completely unclear what this commercial was about.  Guess you'll have to visit the website.

Well that's a rap for this years Superbowl commercials. We can only hope that next year will be back on track. Pepsi used to have some of the best commercials but they were visibly absent this year. Perhaps next year they will get back into it.

So big winner this year was the St. Louis Charges but the big loser was not the Tennessee Titans, it was the commercials.

See ya next year.
