BARBARIANS, THE (1987)

RATING:

By Shawn McKenna
Date Reviewed: October 1, 1997

What happens when you mix two body building brothers who should be wrestling instead of acting into a sword and sorcery movie that has dime-store effects and a muddled script? You create a viewing experience that Ed Wood would be proud of. There is a dragon towards the end of the movie that moves like the Tower of Pisa. The special effects are comparable to the Thief of Bagdad -- the 1924 version. The Paul Brothers have scars across their bodies that come and go throughout the movie. I am not even sure this movie has cult possibilites

I would normally explain the plot here, but I do not think it would be wise to. This movie should not be seen for a plot. One should watch this movie to intiate the conversation, "Guess what horrible 80's fantasy movie I just watched?" I recommend watching this film when you are sick and just taken a dose of Nyquil. Is there anything good about the movie? One of the actors looks like Iggy Pop. I saw a couple of interesting costumes. The actors seem to be having a good time. The movie is more fun to watch than Cyborg or most 80's slasher flicks. It is relatively short for a movie. The brothers do have awesome physiques. But there are plenty of mediocre and good fantasy movies that should be watched before this one. Save your dollar rental for any Conan movie (except Red Sonja) or Clash of the Titans.
