Carol Martin has a photo album in JPG form for those wish to better remember their
experiences at the Spring Flute festival of April 21, 2007. Copies are available
for $20.00 and include 97 photos of the festival itself and 37 photos of the concert
following the festival. Carol is donating half of the money from the sales to
fund the 2008
festival. The photos make excellent screen savers and slide shows to bring back the
pleasure felt on that memorable day.
The flutes used in all but one of the albums listed below have three easily played scales. The first is the pentatonic mode one scale with which most people are familiar. The second is the pentatonic mode four scale which was used by at least one tribe ceremonially. The third is the diatonic scale with which most of our contemporary music is played. Regardless of the scale played, the Native American flute has a unique sound that is extremely pleasing to the ear.
The selections listed were chosen because they are good ones, recommended by people who
create, play, and appreciate Native American flutes and their music. The selection
could have been larger - but this is a non-profit project created by volunteers - not a
retail store.
Paul Zimmer is a medical hypnotherapist who has become a modern troubador. He and his wife go from place to place and show to show, with Paul playing and selling his own handmade Native American style flutes as well as his albums on CD. Paul is a talented composer and flute player. His CDs have been successfully sold by word-of-mouth, concerts, and demonstrations. We are selling them for $16.00 each.
Soaring with the Wind was completed in 1999, and includes ten songs using the mode one Native American scale. All the songs were composed and played by Paul.
I Am a Part of Creation was completed in 2000. It has twelve songs using the mode one Native American scale. All the songs were composed and played by Paul.
Echoes of Soul was completed in 2002. It was created for listeners who wished to meditate, and has been used extensively by massage therapists in their work. It is 42 minutes of uninterrupted flute music played in a manner that induces the alpha state.
Winds of Praise was completed in 2002 when Paul was moving through the Bible Belt. In this album are thirteen soft gospel songs (popular hymns such as Rock of Ages and The Old Rugged Cross). The diatonic scale is used. Playing time is 41 minutes.
Celtic Dreams was completed in 2003. It is composed of 15 songs played with diatonic scale in Celtic style. Playing time is 44 minutes and all of the songs were composed and played by Paul.
Butterflies was completed in 2004. It contains 23 songs played on the diatonic scale (53 minutes of playing time). All the songs were composed and played by Paul.
Whispers of Love was completed in 2004. On this album are 21 songs
composed and played by Paul on the diatonic scale (playing time 46 minutes).
Mary Youngblood is the daughter of an Aleut (native of Alaska) and a Seminole (native of Florida) who met in San Francisco (California). She has won numerous awards with her flute music. Mary's albums all have selections using different keys and scales for the Native American flute. She is a master of variety in tempo, style, and the flute dynamics that provide "feeling" from one musical phrase to the next. Mary has played several times at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, and at this time is scheduled to play at the United Nations in New York to start their drive to attack diabetes in indigenous cultures of the world. Her CDs are being sold here for $19.00 each.
The Offering was recorded in 1998 in Moaning Cavern in Northern California. It contains seventeen selections of solo Native American flute music. This was Mary's ticket to fame at a time when the Grammy was not offered for Native American music. All the songs were written by Mary and played by Mary.
Heart of the World was recorded in 1999 with various flutes, including some with dual chambers. Joanne Shenandoah & Tom Wasinger are the vocalists. Tom Wasinger plays the guitar, mountain dulcimer, bass, drums, hand-drums, mouthbow, eagle bone whistle, bowed zither, and more; and Mark McCoin plays the trap drums, hand drums, and various other percussion instruments. This album is dedicated to three special people who were in the process of setting up a school in Northeastern Columbia for the U'wa nation when they were murdered by terrorists. With this album, Mary won more awards.
Beneath the Raven Moon was recorded in 2002. Once again, Mary had composed and played some excellent songs. This album won the Grammy the first year the Grammy was offered for Native American music in 2003. Once again, Tom Wasinger and Mark McCoin accompany Mary. Ray Wasinger (drums), James Marienthal (piano), James Hoskins (cello), Kelly Shanafelt (viola), Anne Beer (violin), and Tito La Rosa (quena and water vessels) have joined her as well.
Feed the Fire was recorded in 2004 and became a Grammy nominee for 2005. Accompanying Mary are Tom Wasinger, Joanne Shenandoah, James Hoskins, Ian Anderson, Mark McCoin, Ray Wasinger, and Bill Miller.
Dance with the Wind was recorded in 2006 and provided Mary with her second
Grammy. It is a fitting testimony to Mary's talent as a poet, composer, and flutist.
Neoka Falk has spent years playing the Native American flute for people in convalescent homes. Her first album was copyrighted in 2005. She has written an excellent "how-to-play" music book with a CD demonstrator (that we highly recommend) to help beginning and advanced flute players. Her music is usually accompanied with other instruments. We sell Neoka's CDs for $18.00 each.
First Flight was produced in 2005. It has a playing time of 43 minutes and on it are 11 beautiful compositions by Neoka. Mark Haskell accompanies her with the drum. The songs included are varied in tempo and distinctly original, so that the listener is provided with a pleasant variety and never bored.
Edge of Time is a new album featuring Neoka Falk on both the the Native American flute and the drum. Mark Haskell also did a excellent job of drumming for one of the selections. Flutes from seven flutemakers were used and this CD may be the first to use a Native American flute with Middle Eastern tuning. Playing and recording quality are excellent, as is the order of the selections. Playing time is 62 minutes.
Neoka's music invokes the desolation and loneliness of the Sahara; the contrasts between the rock, sand, and lush vegetation of ancient Persia; the splendor of old India; a great reverence for fresh, flowing water; the expanse of the Arabian Sea; the joy of love and celebration; and more. A oneness with nature pervades each of selections, and a recognition of humanity's brief and transitory nature in a universe too old and too large to comprehend.
As the music progresses, one begins to realize that each selection is unique and appropriate
for showing the "edge of time" moving through eternity. The last selection, Call
of the Whales, emphasizes the cyclic yet constant nature of something which changes every
moment and yet never seems to change from one millenium to the next - the sea.
Jim Chambers made an excellent collection of original compositions in CD
form in 1998 called Red Heart, which features the Native American flute accompanied by
various other instruments played by Ellen Record and Muriel Zetter, and David Blonski
as a "guest artist". We are selling copies for $16.00 each.
