I’ve been a photographer
for 27 years. In that time I’ve had the opportunity to photograph
all kinds of people in many different situations including celebrities,
famous athletes, corporate executives, and many “just average folk.”
In each case I’ve striven to feature the special aspect of my subject
that touched me. In recent years I have pursued photographing the female
figure with its beauty, grace and sensuality.
Modeling, or being the subject in an artistic image, involves trust and a willingness to share in the exchange of energy that happens during the creative process. The women (and sometimes men) who work with me are not professional models. They are individuals who appreciate my art, and model for me out of an interest in being a part of the creative process, and in return for original prints. Figure modeling doesn’t require special talent or experience. However, the more the model can contribute with her energy, ideas, and inspiration, the more she is likely to feel satisfaction from the experience. The women and men who model for my fine art projects have “normal” bodies. As is true with humanity, they come in many different sizes, ages, and body types -I don’t aspire to fit the commercial stereotype of beauty into my art. Through my art I do aspire to create a new -more inclusive- definition of feminine beauty. One that is a positive, non-exploitive representation -one that reflects the “goddess nature” present in all women. My images are sensual without being exploitive, beautiful without being demeaning. The model’s safety, comfort and ease is of utmost importance to me. I usually work with a female assistant. A model’s friend or relative is welcome to attend photo-shoots (as long as they aren’t a distraction) in fact they may prove helpful by holding a reflector! HOW WILL THE PHOTOS BE USED? The images that result from the photo-session are part of my continuing exploration of the human form. My work is shown in local galleries as well as internationally via my web site. Additionally, my intention is to share my artistic vision with as many people as possible which may include print publications (calendars, books and magazines) on or about my artwork. The images are not created for commercial advertising purposes (other than self-promotion), and without the model’s permission, would never be used for anything other then as described above. WHERE DO YOU MAKE YOUR IMAGES? I live in the Arcata-Eureka area of northern California and create my art using the landscape that surrounds it. The northern California coast is abundant with scenic beauty -towering redwoods, compelling coastline, rain forest, meadows, and marsh land, that provides varied settings for my artistic creations. WHO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR TO MODEL? I am looking for primarily women (but do use men from time to time) who are interested in figure modeling, either solo or with another as a couple. I have some projects that require an ensemble. Previous experience with modeling isn’t necessary. Some models prefer to be unidentifiable in the created image. While I prefer to work with models who are comfortable being identifiable, I can accommodate your wishes with cropping and/or posing. Good skin is desirable, however physical scars are not an issue and small,
discrete tattoos and body piercing can be worked out. (For those with
larger tattoos, I have a separate Body Art project).
Strong tan lines can be difficult to work with, and should be avoided
if at all possible.
HOW LONG DOES A SESSION TAKE AND WHAT IS INVOLVED? There are two kinds of sessions: outdoors and indoors. Sessions can last from an hour to a full day, but usually are less than four hours. I set up a meeting prior to the first photo session to discuss what my vision is for the specific model I'll be working with and what posing ideas I have. I go into each session with at least a few ideas/poses I would like to accomplish. From there, the session evolves as the model and artist pursue the muse and feel the creative flow. WHAT DOES A MODEL GET IN RETURN FOR WORKING WITH YOU? I make an agreement with each model that meets both of our needs. Typically this includes a number of 8x10 prints of her choice. Additional prints may be purchased by the model at a much reduced rate. I retain copyright of the images made, but it is possible to obtain permission to use images for non-commercial uses, such as on personal web pages etc. Prior to the photo-session I ask the model to sign a ‘release’ giving me permission to photograph her and use any images where she is not identifiable (by facial recognition). When I am through with processing the film I arrange a meeting to show the model all of the images created as a result of our photo-session. During this review the model chooses which images she wants to receive as fulfillment of our agreement. Individual and family portraits, sensuous couple portraits, modeling portfolio prints, partner/spouse photos, are all other possible fulfillment options. WHAT HAPPENS IF A PARTNER/SPOUSE WERE TO OBJECT TO THE IMAGES? Prior to the photo-session I have a frank discussion concerning any
encumbrances associated with figure modeling. Partner/spouse concerns
are something I encourage the model to work out prior to the photo-session.
As for satisfaction with my artistic images, if the model is pleased,
then I am happy. It is important to realize that once a session
is over, and a release is signed, then the images may be used as intended,
regardless of the objection of a partner or spouse. This should be considered
carefully before a model decides to model for the first time. If you are interested in modeling for me please email me by pressing here. Download my three panel brochure about modeling for me. |
