Interconnectedness: Reality is an enigma, a mind boggling mystery. The strange thing about our physical reality is that if we add up all of its interconnected discrete parts we get one. We get one because physical reality is a single reality at any given moment. Physical reality at any given moment is composed of an infinite number of parts; infinite meaning uncountable. No one single part could ever exist in a reality all of its own. For each part to exist, each part must be interdependent with and functionally active within the one totality. So, paradoxically, infinity equals one (¥=1). Just think about it; although mathematically the number 1 can be divided or split into an infinite number of parts, it's still a single 1; all the parts are still part of the 1.
Relative autonomy: Each living unit of physical reality enjoys relative autonomy as an individual but faces the autonomy of the next larger living unit of which it is functionally connected. Every living unit is contained by the next larger living unit. Physical reality as a whole must work out a mutual consistency among all its embedded living units in order to exist. Absolute independence of any part or unit of reality is not possible.
Negotiation: There is an endless negotiation of self-interest activity going on at every level of physical reality between all its imbedded parts and groups of parts. The search seems to be for a dynamic balance or mutual consistency between parts and wholes in order to maintain the continuity of physical reality as a single whole. The integrity of each functioning part has to be endlessly negotiated with the integrity and functioning of all the other parts.
Creative tension: There is a creative tension within physical reality endlessly demanding resolution toward a dynamic balance and mutual consistency between forces. Those parts or groups of parts within physical reality that do not establish mutual consistency and cooperation with their surrounding neighbors will eventually be destroyed, disappear. If the parts of reality cannot be functionally incorporated within the whole, they will cease to exist. It's a continuing unstoppable process of negotiation; an intelligent, improvisational process of sensory communication between parts involving the sensing of the mutual needs of each other that are required for continuing mutual survival. It's a manifestation of intelligence at its most simplest level through sensory contact. This intelligent communication process represents the essence of our experiential reality.
HIDDEN AGENDA
At this juncture of thought we may conclude that the whole is not adequately understood in terms of its parts alone. The scientist looks mainly inward at smaller parts whereas the mystic looks mainly outward toward the universe as a whole. Somewhere between the two lies the mystery of consciousness and spirit, awareness and drive. All point to the hidden realm that lies behind all that is visible; a vital force hidden within energy and matter; a creative tension; a hidden agenda.
