CHAPTER  FIVE

EXPERIENCE  IS  THE  TEACHER

Each  of us is an active integral part of that which we observe through our sensory experience.  Our coming to know of things and of self emerges from that experience.  Experience always involves an active exchange of information and as such is a continuous teaching.

NEW  EMERGING  PERCEPTIONS

There is now emerging in science new innovative investigative models--new ways of seeing, approaching, gathering, and assembling information on physical reality.  In the past, science assumed that physical phenomena are the consequences of the coming together of individual atomistic bits, each with its own intrinsic properties.  Science is now coming to recognize that parts and wholes evolve in consequence of their relationship.  One thing cannot exist without the other, and one acquires its properties from its relationship to the other.

Unity:  A dramatic change in perceiving physical reality is emerging.  What emerged in early science was a methodology based on a division between mind and the nature it contemplated.  A gulf came to exist between consciousness and its object.  Now mankind is slowly coming to a more holistic view of physical reality.  A view of unity where becoming and knowing are inseparably joined.  A view where the observer and the material observed are joined as one; a sacred dance with reality--a union of becoming and knowing.  Knowledge is not hidden, but is manifested in our experiential reality and is accessible through the experience of feeling and thought.

Participatory science:  A participatory approach to understanding experiential reality seems a most promising approach.  We must always remember we humans are an integral part of that which we observe through experience--through our interactive sensing apparatus.  We have gone as far as we can with a scientific dualistic approach to analyzing reality.  This separation from nature and from our own inner nature has spawned a technological world that now endangers our very existence.  Whether we like it or not we exist within a total living participatory universe.  Each of us is an active interdependent participant.

Holistic view:  All life is a single interconnected, interdependent process.  Intelligence can be attributed to the whole universe as an observed property.  Experiential reality is observed as a single intelligent whole; a holarchy of interconnected living units continuously striving for dynamic cooperative mutual consistency.  Living units that do not reach mutual harmony and consistency with others may dominate and destroy for a while, but sooner or later they will cease to exist.  Everything that forms in nature incurs a debt, which it must repay by dissolving so that other things may form.  This is an improvisational dance of mutual creation.  We cannot deny the exuberant and intelligent life of planet and cosmos.  We are forced to inject an intelligent creative principle into nature.

Unstoppable:  Physical reality is an ongoing system of unstoppable activity.  The whole of physical reality is a relation of parts that have no prior independent existence as parts.  There is no basement--no fundamental particles.  The properties of parts are acquired by being parts of a whole.  Organisms both make and are made by the environment.  Change is a basic property of physical reality.  What characterizes physical reality, in all aspects, is that it is constantly in motion.  Systems develop, destroying the conditions that gave rise to them.  A persistent unstoppable force exists that strives toward harmony and equilibrium as a single whole.
