Hobo - 2001

A while back I decided to learn how to carve faces.  After half a dozen practice pieces, I tackled this hobo.

Facial expressions are difficult to carve at this scale -- small changes can change (or screw up) the expression completely.

This is also the first set of hands that I have carved.  Carvings with hands used to intimidate me, but I now have enough confidence to at least try them.

This carving won a Second Place ribbon at the Intermediate level at the Great Salt Lake Woodcarvers' 2002  show.

Size:  7 inches high

Wood: basswood

Finish: acrylic sealer over acrylic paint

Pattern: from "How to Carve Hobos"" by Harold Enlow
