Horse - 1998

This was the first horse that I carved (perhaps I should have started with something larger?)  I like this carving, but I could have done better on the eyes, muzzle, and head shape in general.  I intended this to be stained a solid color, but instead got the dark & light pattern that resulted from applying an oil stain directly to untreated basswood (this was definitely a learning experience).  Despite all this, this piece won a first place ribbon in the Novice level at the Great Salt Lake Woodcarvers' 1999 show.

Size: 4.5 inches high

Wood: Basswood

Finish: Black Walnut Watco (Danish) oil rubbed with Antiquax

Pattern: from "Projects for Creative Woodcarving" by Ian Norbury
