Horse Walking Stick - 2004

Inspired by a book by Tom Wolfe on carving walking sticks, I decided to try one.  I found a sturdy piece of lodgepole pine and decided a horse head would make a nice cap.

Tom Wolfe used nylon cord to wrap that handles of his sticks, but I decided to use materials more in keeping with the horse theme.  The handle is wrapped with oiled leather and some woven leather lacing covers the boundaries of the wrapping.

Overall, it came out very nice.  The only problem now is, it's too nice to actually use as a walking stick!  (So it just decorates my office).

This carving won second place in Advanced at the Idaho Woodcarvers Guild 2004 show, and first place in Advanced at the Great Salt Lake Woodcarvers 2004 show.

Size:   about 5 inches high (head); stick is about 5 feet
