Walnut Dolphin - 2003

I saw a stylized dolphin carving in a book and I liked the idea of using a "wave" for a built-in base.  However, I didn't like that particular pattern or carving.  So, I decided to make my own pattern.  After filling a few sheets of paper with sketches, I decided on the basic proportions and arrangement, which I then sketched full-size to fit a piece of Walnut I had waiting.  Except for the final sanding, this was carved using a Foredom rotary tool with tungsten carbide and ruby bits.

I'm probably biased, but I think my dolphin looks better than the one in the book!
