I don't exactly know why I decided
to carve a Rhino. They're not exactly sleek or elegant like many
other animals that are the subjects of carvings. Oh well, I think it
turned out well. The wood grain nicely emphasizes the bulky shapes
and rounded form. When I was planning this carving, I intentionally
aligned the rhino's midsection with the wood grain so it would produce the
bulls-eye pattern. In fact, several people have suggested that I
name this carving "Bulls-Eye".
This carving won
third place in Advanced stylized animals at the Idaho Woodcarvers Guild
2004 show, and first place in Advanced stylized animals at the 2004 Great
Salt Lake Woodcarvers show.
