FreeZip is a small, fast and efficient Zip utility for compression and decompression of files and directories in Windows 95/NT4. FreeZip integrates with Windows Explorer and uses file associations and context menus to zip or unzip files, including long file names and subdirectories. If you know how to use Windows Explorer, then you do not have to learn anything new to use FreeZip. The setup is a single-click process and there are no options or settings involved. a few notes from me about creating zipped files... FreeZip only zips folders, but all of the contents of a folder get compressed into a zipped file (including other folders) [and so you know] [the directory path is preserved]. this is the only thing you need to be careful about... all folders and files within a folder will be compressed, even if you only want one folder. an example will explain this better... i have a folder called pictures, and inside this folder i have other folders called gifs, bmps, jpgs, and the .exe files for irfan, freeview, and visua. so inside of my pictures folder, i have 3 folders and 3 executable files. if i right click on my gifs folder and select "zip" from the context menu, all 3 folders, their contents, and the 3 executables will be compressed into a zip file. so what i now have are the original folders and files and the newly created zipped file (containing the 3 folders, their contents, and the 3 executables) all in my pictures folder. ---- so you just have to be careful and not zip a folder on your c:\ drive since the program will attempt to compress your entire c:\ drive into one zip file! which, i suppose, could be useful, but probably not. ---- so you just have to be organized is all!!!! create a folder called "to be zipped", and inside the "to be zipped" folder, you create a "zipping" folder to hold the files and\or directories that you want compressed into a zip file. once the zipped file is created, you then move them out to their proper location. the "zipping" folder inside of the "to be zipped" folder is now empty and ready for the next zipping task. ---- FreeZip is simple, easy, and powerful!! as long as you are organized and careful, you will never regret using Freezip!! and let's say you do try to compress your c:\ drive into a zip file; when you run out of disk space, FreeZip will give you an error message, stop running, and remove the zip file that it was trying to create. or if you do have enough space, just let it finish, and then delete the new zip file. no harm, no foul. |
