------*****------
RESCUE is a Windows 95 Recovery program
------*****------
This is a recovery program that is extremely powerful!
It is fully functional and easy to use.
It will backup and restore the following files:
Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Command.com, IO.sys, MSDOS.sys, Protocol.ini,
System.da0, System.dat, System.ini, User.da0, User.dat, and Win.ini,
should any registry corruption happen.
It also has an installation program and instructions.
------*****------
the above is from the author's homepage!
------*****------
the following is from the readme.txt file.
(RES.EXE and the readme.txt are the two files you get in the downloaded zip file.)
------*****------
Print and save this page!
RES.EXE is a self extracting archive and contains an install program.
Double click on RES.EXE and extract to c:\WINDOWS\temp.
Go there and double click the INSTALL.BAT.
The two folders it installs, RESCUE and RESCUE1, contain a backup and repair program.
Both programs backup and restore the following files:
Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Command.com, IO.sys, MSDOS.sys, Protocol.ini,
System.da0, System.dat, System.ini, User.da0, User.dat, and Win.ini.
RESCUE automatically runs every time your computer is started.
------*****------
RESCUE1 you manually run by double clicking the BACKUP1.BAT in RESCUE1
and all the above files will copy to RESCUE1.
------*****------
To restore from your backup, start the computer and press F8 when your
computer reads "Starting Windows 95" and select the "Command Prompt Only" option.
At the Command Prompt, type "CD RESCUE", press enter, then type "REPAIR", press enter again.
The files are automatically copied.
Now restart the computer.
RESCUE1 is the same except you type "CD RESCUE1" at the command prompt
and type "REPAIR1" to restore from your backup in the RESCUE1 folder.
------*****------
Don't click the REPAIR.BAT in Windows. It won't work properly!
------*****------

----
i would now like to add my experience with RESCUE
and some more information...

first of all, this is an excellent, excellent, excellent, little utility!!
you can look all you want, but you will not find an easier way
to back up and restore your vital registry information!!
it's simple! it's easy! and it works!!

----
having said that, there are one or two things you need to know.
i extracted the files from RES.EXE into a temporary folder different from c:\WINDOWS\temp
(i should've read the readme.txt file first) and double clicked the INSTALL.BAT file.
when i did this, the RESCUE and RESCUE1 folders were created,
(on the c: drive where they belong) but they were empty.
and it did not get registered, so rescue does not run everytime i startup my computer.
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? THAT'S OK.
i don't necessarily want my registry backed up every single time i reboot.
(which you tend to do just because you are using windows95)
(however, if you do want rescue to run every time your computer starts,
a RESCUE.REG file is included which will take care of that).
----
anyway,
THIS IS WHAT YOU DO:
copy(or cut) and paste BACKUP.BAT and REPAIR.BAT into the RESCUE folder.
and
copy(or cut) and paste BACKUP1.BAT and REPAIR1.BAT into the RESCUE1 folder.
IT IS THAT SIMPLE!
----
now you have two folders where you can easily backup your registry.
just double click BACKUP.BAT (in the RESCUE folder) or BACKUP1.BAT (in the RESCUE1 folder),
the files are automatically copied over and you are protected!
to restore from a backup, just follow the directions in the readme.txt file.
----
HOWEVER, IF YOU WANT THE INSTALLATION TO GO AS OUTLINED
IN THE README.TXT FILE, THEN DON'T DO WHAT I DID.
YOU NEED TO EXTRACT THE FILES TO THE c:\WINDOWS\temp FOLDER.
THE INSTALLATION PROGRAM WAS SETUP WITH THIS PATH
AS THE DEFAULT INSTALLATION PATH.
DO THIS AND YOU WILL BE FINE!!

----
for me, no big deal though,
i like the way it turned out on my computer.
[[basically, that was all i wanted to add.]]
----

----
well, i could go on,
and though that would be senseless (hey, could it be a recurring theme??)
there would be no point to it!
and i could not live with myself for inflicting both
pointlessness and senselessness on you [i'm pretty sure those are words].
anyway...
*******_download RESCUE version 1 right here!! 16.3 KB zipped._*******
and backup that registry!! you hear me?!?!?

Rescue version 1 is above on this page.

----
if you have questions, you should naturally email the author.
however, if i confused the heck out of you,
and/or you are truly desperate, you can email me.
i will try my best to help.

it wasn't very long ago that i was a major wimp
when it came to playing with windows95.
shoot, even backing up my registry seemed like a forbidden thing to do.
however, RESCUE is very easy to use and can be life-saving!
backing up the registry is too important not to do!
i am extremely patient, so if you have any misgivings,
please email me and we'll work through those nagging feelings
and make it work!
thanks!
