Game Summaries:

May 25, 2000
One thing Numb has always been and that is unpredictable and resilient. A week after a horrible game, Numb rebounds to play well, hit better and win, 14-8. A special guest appearance by Mike 'the Franchise' Watari didn't hurt! Numb managed only 3 runs until the 4th, when Coach Eddie bashed a bases loaded double to put Numb even. Taking a fragile 10-8 lead into the bottom of the 6th, Numb hits until time runs out. Leading the hitting barrage (Numb smacked 23 hits) were, Stan Dote, 3-3, run, rbi, Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark, 3-4, triple, 2 runs, 2 rbis, Numbmaster, 3-4, 2 rbis, JT, 3-4, rbi, and Joe 'the Kid', 3-4, run. 'the Franchise', Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, and Chaba de Hutt each went 2-4, with 'the Franchise' smacking a double, scoring 3 runs and collecting an rbi. Coach Eddie and Mark 'the Quiv' each got one hit, but Eddie collected 3 rbis and scored once. The umpiring was probably the worst of the season, with bad calls galore, no concept of minimum or maximum arc, and a tendency to not be looking where the play was happening! For the outrageous fees we pay for the league, this is inexcusable.
Coache Eddie made the last out of the game, after the timekeeper called time, and the umpire wondered weather to call the game or not. There was no 10 run rule, so after a while, the decision was made to continue the inning (there were 2 outs). So Eddie was allowed to bat, so he kindly flied out, taking Chaba off the hook.

Numb celebrates JT's birthday (man, the guy is getting OLD!) by playing one horrible inning, blowing a 7-0 lead, and loses 8-7 to Dave's No Names. Numb defense was stellar until the ill-fated 5th inning. We threw behind runners for outs, recorded a catch and run double play and stranded 10 opposing runners on base. But the 5th marked a total collapse of the defense and combined with the suddenly anemic offense, Numb falls to 4-4. Timmy lead the offense, going 3-4 with a triple, run and 2 rbis. Craig and Colin each went 2-4, with 2 runs, rbi and 3 rbis respectively. One hit wonders where Numbmaster, 2 runs, JT, and Stan, double, run. Thats it. Oh yeah, once again the umpires were bad, out of position on most calls and clearly unable to determine a 12 foot arc. Perhaps they took a online course to become certified. Actually, the umpires had no bearing on Numb's fate, but it was annoying, just the same.
The evening was punctuated by Chaba De Hutt arriving at nearly the end of the game, cheerfully bringing the beer, oblivious to the fact there were only 9 fielders! Coach Eddie made the last out and will be on hand for the Spring finale, where Numb looks to salvage a winning season.

I am still hurting over this one. We gave the game away to the D-2 rejects, the annoying Mazda Misfits. Numb defense did not get the job done, the worst of it was the Numbmaster's gaffe of missing a popup with the bases loaded and 2 outs. That paved the way for 5 Misfit runs. After leading 6-2, we were down 12-10 late. A scrappy Numb rally has us up 14-12 in the final inning, but Mazda scored 3 to win in the bottom half. Leading hitters were Numbmaster, 3-4, 4 runs, 3 rbis, Chaba de Hutt, 3-4, double, 2 runs, 2 rbis, Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark, 2-3, run, 2 rbis, Hannaman, 2-3, and the Quiv, 2-3, run. Timmy went 2-4 with 3 runs, JT, 2-4, triple, run, 2 rbis and one hit wonders were Craig Haley, run, Coach Eddie, run and Joe 'the Kid' Harris who made his a key double and collected 2 rbis.
Chaba somehow once again made the last out and will bring the refreshments next week.

It was an interesting game against Calgene. There were strange plays, great plays and timely hitting. Luckily Numb got most of the good stuff and prevailed, 9-7. Fielding gaffes (mostly mental errors like throwing to second with no runner on first) by Calgene paved the way for Numb. Leading hitters where Numbmaster, 2-3, run (plus a nasty swinging strikeout), Joe 'the Kid' Harris, 2-3, 2 runs, 2 rbis, JT, 2-4, run, Chaba de Hutt, 2-4 2 runs. One hit notables were Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark, rbi, Stan Dote, run, rbi and Coach Eddie, rbi.
Numb defense came through with Timmy tracking down a 2 out gapper with the bases loaded in the late innings. Chaba made the last out and will bring the refreshments next week.

Numb starts hitting and playing defense! A couple of real good innings turns a close game to a 19-9 victory. Leading hitters were Timmy, 3-3, triple, 3 runs, JT, 3-4, double, 2 runs, 2 rbis, the Quiv, 3-4, run, 2 rbis, Numbmaster, 2-3, 2 runs, 3 rbis, and Colin 'Mr. Clean', 2-3, 2 runs, rbi. Other notables were Chaba de Hutt, 2-4 3 runs, Joe 'the Kid', 2-4, 3 runs, rbi, Hannaman, 1-2, 2 rbis and Coach Eddie, 1-2, run, 2 rbis.
Once again the field umpire was pretty bad, he was out of position most of the time and made some pretty bad calls, 2 agin us and one for us. The City really should pay attention to this situation. Anyway, Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley made the last out of the game and will provide delightful refreshments for next week's game.

How does Numb spell relief? S-o-u-l-s. That, and the return of Mike 'the Franchise' Watari provided all that Numb needed to beats the Souls 17-6. Defense was solid and the offense did what it had to do. Leading the hitting and earning his moniker was 'the Franchise', going 3-4, with a grand slam home run, triple, a run and 5 rbis. Chaba 'the Hutt' went 2-2, home run, 3 runs, 2 rbis, JT went 3-4, double, run, 2 rbis, Craig, Colin and Stan each went 2-3, with Craig tallying a double, 3 runs, rbi, and Stan scoring 2 runs. Timmy, Numbmaster and Couch Eddie each got one hit.
The umpiring was much improved over the last few weeks (unlike MLB and the NBA, we can comment on the officials as much as we want without fearing league fines). In true Numb tradition, Colin played injured and limping, while Joe 'the Kid' made the last out of the game. Ah, youth!

April 13, 2000
Shorthanded Numb takes on legendary rivals, Jos Heros and loses in the final at-bat, 9-8. It was a close game, again marred by bad calls, er, bad calls that went against us. Must be a bunch of rookie umps this year, typically, officiating in Davis is top notch. Nevertheless, the game was lost on a well hit ball by one of the Heros that went for a game winning home run. As soon as I get to the scorebook, I'll post some stats. I was one of those bastards at the Kings game.

April 6, 2000
Numb takes the field to defend their 1-0 record and die by the call, and lots of hits by the other team, to fall 24-6. Numb manages 8 hits for the game and had 2 rallies killed by bad calls, thus proving the theorum that calls even out over the long run. The laughable Numb 'offense' was lead by Hanna-man who was 1-1. I lost the damn write up, so the other 'offensive stars' will have to go unnamed. Stan 'the Man' Dote made the last out of the game, getting me off the hook. Next week has to be better, but Numb will be missing 4 players who are off to the Kings game on Thursday. Bastards.

March 30, 2000
Numb opens their 22nd year with a hard fought, defensively absent, hit laden slugfest with long time friendly rivals Altered Minds. Numb scores 8 in the first inning, then watches in awe as the Minds use aluminum sticks of dy-no-mite to crush at least 6 home runs and build a 18-14 lead going into Numbs last at-bat. Numb, aided by two close (some, notably Altered Minds, would say incorrect) calls, scores 10 runs to build a 24-18 lead. In the bottom, the Minds would not quit, but came up short to fall 24-22. No folks, we did not play football.
Leading Numb hitters were: Timulator, 4-4, double, home run, 4 runs, 2 rbis, Mark 'the Quiv', 4-4, 3 runs, Numbmaster Silva, 3-4, double, 3 runs, 3 rbis, Hanna-man, 3-4, run, rbi, and Craig 'No Nickname Yet' Haley, 3-5, 2 doubles, 2 runs, rbi. Other multihitters include J.T., 2-4, home run, 2 runs, 3 rbis, Chaba the Hutt, 2-4, home run, 3 runs, 2 rbis, and Stan 'the Man' Dote, 2-4, 2 runs, rbi. Coach Eddie and Joe 'the Kid' Harris made the most of their one hit each, both smashing key triples, Eddies with the based loaded. Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark added one hit and a run.
New recruit Colin brought his friend Joe and both were quickly signed by Coach Eddie and added youth, speed, and attitude to Numb. In true Numb spirit, Colin made the last out of the game and is quickly introduced to Numb's most enduring tradition: The last out of the game brings the beer next week!

Preview
Numb starts Fall with the loss of key Numbsters Kip 'the Ripper' Byars, who has the only legitimate excue, he has moved to San Diego (hmmm, sounds familiar?). Dave 'New Guy Dave' Redford, Mike 'the Franchise' Watari and The Secret Senator have all declined to play Spring ball, although rumor has it that 'the Franchise' will fill in if needed. And boy, is he needed!!
They will all be missed! We at Numb wish them the best of luck, but secretly feel that they are making the mistake of their lives by leaving Numb. But, Coach Eddie once again coaxed retired Numbster Stan 'Staniel' Dote out of retirement along with Mark 'the Quiv' Hirzy. New recruit Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark from the Numbmaster's work will provide the sorely needed youth spark. Results to be announced!
