Record: 7-2 D-3 Summer Champs!!!!
Game Summaries:August 10, 2000
The Numbies win the pennant!! The Numbies win the pennant!! This time for real! Numb is the Summer D-3 champions!! Numb turns out a hard fought, gritty, determined effort to edge Valley Farm Transport 10-9. Boy, it feels good to beat kids for the title!! Coach Eddie, the Franchise and JT provided offensive magic, while the
right fielder (me) made a diving catch that had the fans out of thier seats (I think they were going to the bathroom) and had people talking about it well after the game (well, I talked about it!). Numb was down early, 5-2 but scored 7 to go ahead 9-5. The Farm boys crept back to 10-7 and in the bottom of the 6th, Numb was trying to run out the clock. Bases loaded, one out and JT rips a liner to short. Ball is caught and Colin, halfway to home, is doubled off. The Farm boys get to hit. They are up to the challenge, gettin two runs in to trail 10-9. Runners on first and second, two outs. Next batter, base hit, runner comes steaming around third. Joe the Kid throws home. The throw is on line and beats the runner by so much, that when Quiv knocks down the ball, and the runner turns tail back to third. The next batter lofts a fly to left, Joe catches it, game over!!
Offensive was powered by Mr. Clutch, Coach Eddie, 3-3, run, 3 rbis, JT, 3-4, double, 3 runs, rbi and Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 3-4, run. All others got one hit, Colin, run, Timmy, run, rbi, Numbmaster, run, rbi, Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, Joe the Kid, 2 runs, Hannaman, 2 rbi and Stan da Man, rbi.
A couple of errors and baserunning gaffes made the game very close, but Numb had enough to win. Colin was charged with the last out of the game with his getting doubled off of third. Numb can now bask in the glow with a 3 week layoff as Fall league doesn't start until September 7th. To Connie!!!!

Numb continues its winning ways by winning a nail biter over Altered Minds 5-4. It was a pitchers duel as JT was the man, forcing the Minds into popup after popup, and running like a madman to make catch popups and make a force at third. He also shut down the middle, knocking down screaming line drives and getting the out. The rest of the defense was tight and nearly error-free, thwarting Mind rallies. Hitting was anemic, but enough to win. Leading the 'charge' were Timmy, 2-3, run, 2 rbi (impressive when you consider thats 40% of the total!), Numbmaster, 2-3, run, and Colin, 2-3, run. Mike 'the Franchise' Watari went 2-4, with a run, rbi. One hitters were Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, rbi, Stan da Man, and Mark 'the Quiv', run.
In his bid to become a true Numbie, the Franchise made the last out of the game for Numb and will double his pleasure by bringing the beer once again. I think this equals his total for the last 2 years!.

The Numbies win the pennant!!! The Numbies win the pennant!!! Well, not really, but a resurgent Numb knocks off the first place team, Valley Farm Transport 14-5. We only scored 10 runs, but got a 4 run cushion due to a ruling that the Farm Boys only had 7 players at game time. So, agitated over that, the Farm Boys were kept off their game (which consists of smashing the ball and scoring lots of runs) by crafty JT pitching and the skill of the Numb youngsters in the outfield, Joe the Kid, Colin and Timmy.
The Numb combination of old age and treachery, combined with some youth and skill overcame the youth and skill of the Farm Boys. Leading Numb at the plate were, Stan the Man, 3-3, 2 rbi, Numbmaster, 2-2, run, rbi and Timmy, 2-3, run. One hit wonders were, Colin, run, rbi, JT, 2 rbi, Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, run, Chaba de Hutt, run, Coach Eddie, run, rbi and Mark the Quiv, rbi.
Good pitching and timely defense kept Numb ahead from the start, as the Farm Boys were never able to get the big inning going. Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, in his first hitless game for Numb, made the last out of the game.

Numb plays tight and keeps pace with Jo's Heroes and wins its third walk off game, 10-6! Late inning heroics are becoming the norm for Numb, as 3 out of 4 summer wins have been in the last at-bat. Mark 'the Quiv' Hirzy, ancient, once again proves that old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill by knocking in the winning run. He knows I'm kidding, he actually is not that ancient! Leading hitters were the nearly as ancient Coach Eddie, 3-3, 2 runs, rbi, somewhat ancient Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 1-1, run, rbi and the soon-to-be ancient Numbmaster, 1-1, rbi. Needless to say, hitters are listed in percentage rather than amounts of hits! Equally as impressive, were the hardly ancient Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark, 3-4, triple, run, 3 rbis, whose triple proved the last at-bat and ran out the clock, the proto-ancient Chaba De Hutt, 2-3, double, run, and the truely ancient Hannaman, 2-3, run, rbi. Joe the Kid, Timmy, Stan da Man and the Quiv each got one hit.
Defense was steady and kept Numb close. Once again, some of the umpiring was laughable, as in one call at first where the runner clearly beating the throw was called out (even the other team admitted he was safe) and the home plate umpire clueless as to minimum and maximum arc. Joe the Kid made the last out of the inning for Numb and will pay the usual price.

Well, feast follows famine for Numb, as 12 players showed up for this game. So, expectedly, Numb plays inversly proportional to the amount of players. Trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the last inning, Numb hits and walks its way to 4 runs, then runs out time to edge Snap-On Tools (they must catch hell for that name!) 10-9. Numb collected 12 hits, but a patient 9 walks really turned the tide. In contrast the the oldsters hitting of last week, the youngins lead the pace with Colin going 4-4, run, rbi and Joe the Kid going 1-1, double, 2 runs. JT and Coach Eddie lead the oldsters cause, each going 2-3, with Eddie notching a double with one run and 2 rbis. Stan, Craig and Chaba each got one hit. Mike 'the Franchise' Watari was strangely hitless, but knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly. In a strange twist of fate known only to Numbsters, that was the last out of the game for Numb so once again, the person with the game winning rbi has to bring the beer!
Defense was good, with the Franchise burning Hannaman's hand on two double plays, and picking an errant runner off second who strayed too far.

After a few Numbsters had a less than great time in the annual 4th of July Tournament, we faced a team that played in the tournament and beat our guys. Plus, Numb could only scrape up 8 players, 6 healthy! Talk in the dugout turned to batting then walking off the field to get pizza and beer. Then, the unthinkable happend. We played the game! Not only played, we won 15-12 with an old infield and the youngsters in the outfield. In addition to hitting, Numb threw out 2 runners on the bases one at third before a runner going home touched the plate.
JT lead the batting charge, going 4-5, with 3 runs and 3 rbis. Close behind was the Numbmaster, 3-4, 3 runs, rbi. Other notables were Joe the Kid, 2-3, 2 runs, 2 rbis, Timmy, 2-4, two doubles, 4 runs, base, and Hanna-man, 2-4 4 rbis. Chaba and Coach Eddie each got one hit, with run, rbi and 2 runs, 3 rbis respectively. Clutch hitting by Hanna-man and Coach Eddie proved the difference, as each batted with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with great hits. JT made the last out of the game, his only out. That too, is the way of Numb.

Numb Wins! Numb Wins! Numb breaks the summer jinx against a good team and hangs on to beat YME/Goats 9-8 in a tie breaker (Davis league version of extra innings). This game marked the return of 'the Franchise' and Timulator and both were needed. Numb only collected 9 hits, but played good defense and ran the bases well to keep the game close. Leading hitters were Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark, 2-3, double, 2 runs, Numbmaster Silva, 2-3, run, rbi, and Stan 'Da Man' Dote, 2-3, rbi. One hit wonders were Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, run, Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, triple, run, 2 rbis, Timulator Townsend, run, 2 rbis, Joe 'the Kid' Harris, game winning run, and Coach Eddie, rbi.
No 10 run rule this game, it was close all the way. Tied 8-8 after regulation, the Goats came up in the top of the tie-breaker. The last out of the previous inning starts at second base, and there is one out to start the inning. The first Goats' player actually BUNTS, a nice bunt, sure, but totally illegal and is called out. In all my years, I have never seen anyone bunt. Numb retires the next batter and is now up, with the fleetest Numbster, Joe the Kid on second. Stan rips a base hit, sending Joe to third. Mark the Quiv, becomes both the hero and the goat, grounding to shortstop who makes the play to second for the force, while the fleet-for-his-age Quiv beats the relay to first, the fleet-for-any-age Joe scampers home with the winning run. So, Quiv gets the game winning RBI, but makes the last out of the game and has to bring the beer next week. Such is the way of Numb.

Well, a slightly more healthy Numb took the field against Altered Minds. Unfortunately, the Minds have been taking performace enhancing drugs and hit the crap out of the ball and downed Numb 23-12. Numb collected 13 hits and 8 walks, but could only watch helplessly as the Minds scored seemingly at will. Joe the Kid, Stan the Man, and Mark the Quiv each went 2-3 with Joe scoring twice and Stan once. Colin went 2-4 with a run. Craig Haley (2 runs), JT (run, rbi), Chaba de Hutt (2 runs, 2 rbis), and Coach Eddie (run, rbi) each got one hit.
Defense was adequate, good enough to win if the Minds would not have hit so well and we would have hit better. We had the same ump as last week, but given the non-closeness of the game, they didn't matter. We were friggin 10 run ruled again, while batting with the bases loaded and one out. Even the Minds wanted the inning completed, but our pleas fell on the deaf, unfeeling ears of the officials. The worst part was that I made the only out of the inning and have to bring the beer next week!!

There were many ways to describe the game. A valiant effort, enough bad Numb karma to last the season, the walking wounded, or in the immortal words of Howard Cosell, "What a pathetic performance". Downed by the Souls 12-2, Numb can only look forward. Nearly half of the Numbsters taking the field should have been on the bench (because of their injuries, come on!) and it showed. 8 hits, 2 runs. Offensive 'stars' were Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark, 2-3 and Numbmaster, 2-3, who had a bad groin pull plus a bad arm and a pulled hamstring respectively. JT, Joe the Kid, Hanna-Man and Coach Eddie were the only other Numbsters to get a hit.
Defense was ugly, with Joe the Kid playing a hell of a game and keeping Numb close, until the last inning when the Souls scored 5 runs and freaking 10 run ruled us!! After all that, we didn't get to bat in the bottom of the inning!! Did I mention that the 10 run rule is CRAP?? More umpiring gaffes as a large, loud, obnoxious umpire vehemently argued that he could see runners touching first base EVEN WITH HIS BACK TURNED! Actually, he said he was adamant that he saw the play and was in position, where on the very next play he had his back turned, which was where he was on the previous play where the runner missed first by about a foot! Coach Eddie made the last out. Numb hopes to play better next week. Heal guys!!
