Game Summaries:

August 16, 2001
Numb falls in its final summer game, don't remember the score since I have moved and lost the update papers. I remember we had 16 hits, but only scored 5 runs! Figure that out... After 3 weeks off, Numb gears up for the last chance to salvage the year, Fall Season!.

August 9, 2001
Numb faces the first place, 6-1, Jo's Heroes and spanks their rosy bottoms!! After Numb scores 2 runs in the top of the first, Jo's tries to come back and Colin nails a runner at third. That would be the closest Jo's would get to scoring. Even the presence of Brad Nicolette (who has played tournaments with Numb) doesn't help the Heroes as they are totally shut down. Although Numb's run and hit totals are the same as last week, scoring is more even. I forgot the sheet, so more will be added later. Again leading the charge were Rootbeer Haley, 3-4 and Numbmaster Silva 3-4. JT wants you to know he walked 3 times, but was the only Numbster without a hit!
Chaba made the last out of the game. Numb hopse to climb above .500 next week...

August 2, 2001
Numb finally scores! Buoyed by 7 run first and last innings, Numb beats the Souls 16-8. After overcoming a 5-0 Souls lead, and leading by one run, Numb busts loose to secure the win. Unfortunately, Haley the Younger injured his wrist making a diving grab in the outfield. Hopefully, its not serious and he will be back soon. Leading the Numb hit parade were Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, 4-4, 3 runs, 3 rbis, Numbmaster Silva, 3-4, triple, 2 runs, 2 rbis, JT, 2-3, run, 3 rbis, Chaba de Hutt, 2-3, 2 runs, Joe da Kid (back from the honeymoon) 2-3, 2 runs, and Hannaman, 2-3, run, 2 rbis. Jeff Williams was 2-4, run, rbi and one hit wonders Brad and Colin had a run, and a run, 2 rbis respectively.
Hannaman again made the last out of the game. Going for three in a row! Numb is hoping to climb to .500 and over...

Numb wins! We hit, play some defense and take walks. Then withstand a last minute rally, by getting out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the last inning. Leading the charge is a mix of the old and the young. JT went 3-3, run, 3 rbis, Numbmaster Silva, 2-2, triple (what the??) run, 3 rbis, Brad Haley the Younger, 3-4, 2 runs, Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, 2-3, w runs, Coach Eddie, run, and J Will, 2-4, 2 runs, rbi. Hannaman and Chaba de Hutt each got one hit. What is needed is Colin to get out of his dismal 0-fer slump, the return of Joe da kid, Numb would be a power!
Hannaman made the last out of the game. Buoyed by winning, Numb will take on the Souls next week...

Not much new to report. Numb still is in the summer hitting slump, collecting 13 hits, but a robust 9 runs, still falling to Altered Minds 11-9. A late rally had the Minds worried, but some strange baserunning cut down a runner at third to end the game. Jeff Williams (J Will?) brought a friend to fill in for the departed (getting married or some such nonsense) Joe da Kid. Jason reponds by leading Numb with a 2-2, 3 rbi day. Other hitters were Numbmaster, 2-3, run, JT, 2-3, run, Colin 'Mr. Clean' 2-3, run, 2 rbis, and Rootbeer Haley, 2-3, 2 runs. Brad (Haley the Younger), Mr. Williams, and Hannaman each had one hit.
Although Jason made the last out of the game, Mr. Williams took financial responsibilty and will bring the suds for the next game. At last report, no Numbsters were seen at the batting cages...

July 12, 2001
The bad news is that Numb still can't hit. The good news is that we can play defense and Numb holds the other team to 2 runs and wins for the first time in Summer, 6-2. Defense was highlighted by Rootbeer Haley running and grabbing popups, a strike to nail a runner at the plate by Colin, Joe da Kid tracking down a DEEP fly ball and Haley the Younger and Chaba de Hutt anchoring the right side of the outfield. There were no ground ball plays till the 7th inning, and by that time the Numbmaster, playing first, was so asleep that he derfed the play.
Leading hitters were Brad Haley the Younger, getting the hang of the game, 3-3, rbi, Numbmaster, 3-4, run, rbi, Jeff Williams, 2-3, 2 runs. One hit wonders were Joe da Kid, JT, run, 2 rbis, Coach Eddie, run, rbi, Chaba, and Sir Geoffrey, rbi. Chaba de Hutt made the last out of the game, so we are looking forward to some Davis Coop kind of brew...

Numb is not hitting well. There is no other way to say it, we can't hit. With only 12 hits scoring 7 runs, Numb falls to 0-3 losing to the Goats, 11-7. Leading hitters were Mr. Williams, 3-4, 3 runs, Rootbeer Haley, 2-3, double, run, rbi, Coach Eddie, 2-3, run, Chaba de Hutt, 2-3, rbi and Haley the Younger (Brad), 2-4 run, rbi. The Numbmaster and Sir Geoffrey each got one hit. Thats about it.
The other newcomer, Sir Geoffrey, made the last out of the game, so all the new Numbsters are well versed in the last out ritual.

Numb plays well against a team that seemed to smack the cover off the ball. Down 12-6 early, Numb plays some excellent defense and trails 14-10 in the seventh. Scratching and fighting, Numb falls just short, losing 14-13. Hitting was much improved, with only one of the 12 Numbsters present going hitless. Leading hitters were Haley the Younger, 2-2, run, Numbmaster, 3-4, run, rbi, Chaba de Hutt, 3-4, run, rbi, and Hannaman, 3-4, 2 runs. JT da pirate, 2-3, double, run, rbi and Jeff (Matt?) Williams, 2-4, run, team leading 3 rbis were the only other multi-hitters. One hit wonders were Joe da Kid, run, rbi, Rootbeer Haley, Colin 'Mr. Clean' Kark, 2 runs, 2 rbis and Coach Eddie, 2 runs.
Defense again, was pretty darn good, although a grand slam and a massive 3 run homer by the opponents sealed their win. At a field with fences, perhaps a different story. Coach Eddie was seen smiling as Jeff Williams time and again put his body on the line at third and turned a nifty double play by snagging a bullet and throwing to first to double up the runner. Numbmaster got one of the cheapest hits in Numb history, hitting a weak grounder to the first baseman, who bobbled and tagged the base well ahead of the lumbering base runner. But the huffing Numbmaster pointed out that the first baseman tagged the orange base, which in our league is for the baserunner! So the call was changed to safe. Mr. Williams made the last out of the game and will bring the beer next week. Welcome to Numb!

Numb starts the summer with 3 new faces, Brad Haley, son of Craig 'Rootbeer' Haley, Jeff Williams, who e-mailed Numb and asked to play, and Sir Geoffrey, another Internet volunteer. All newcomers showed promise, with Mr. Williams (given the respectful Mr. being the oldest of the newcomers at 30ish, still much younger than most Numbsters!) anchoring third base with skill that brought back memories of a younger, diving Coach Eddie, Haley the Younger adds speed and a strong arm to the outfield but struggled at the plate in making the transision from real ball (baseball) to the more mature man's game. Sir Geoffrey showed good instincts and the rust from not having played in years.
Oh, the game... Well Numb, excited from the influx of new talent, totally tanks at the plate, and falls meekly to Jo's Heroes 8-5. Yes, thats right, a Davis D3 game with a score of 8-5. Leading hitters (pay attention, this is short!) were Joe da Kid (although with the addition of the 22 year old Haley the Younger, this nickname may change!) 3-4, 2 runs, Numbmaster Silva, 3-4 run, 2 rbis, Coach Eddie, 2-3, Jeff Williams (no nickname yet) 1-3, 2 rbis, and Rootbeer Haley, 1-4, run. Yes, half the team did not get a hit. Not a winning formula.
Defense was pretty darn good, with Numb turning a remarkable double play that started with a booted grounder. Haley the Younger threw to Coach Eddie at home to nail the runner, then Eddie gunned the ball to Jeff at third to catch the runner advancing. The last out of the game was also strange, with the Numbmaster hitting a ball that hit baserunner Joe da Kid. The rules state that the runner is out and the batter is awarded a hit. So Joe technically made the last out of the game, even though I was the batter.
