NUMB WINS THE PENNANT!!! NUMB WINS THE PENNANT!!!!!

In what was poised to be a classic Davis City League softball Battle of the D3 Division Titans, the rematch of the 1st place Numbies vs. the 2nd place Cary Johnson Construction (CJ) exploded into an old fashioned wuppin'. During the previous weeks game, Numb and CJ duked it out throughout a one run game to a last-inning, come-from-behind, floodgate-opening 13-8 win for the Numbies. This championship rematch was looking like it was going to be a Barn Burner. And it was all that and more, as Numb burned Cary's barn to the ground,..and then stirred the ashes.
The tone of the game was set when, in the first inning, CJ scored two runs in the top. Then Numb's lead batter, "Speedy boy" Bradley "the Boy" Haley, through lightningly fast running, an aggressive stance in the base path, and a bunch of CJ Keystone Cop-like throws, slips, and falls, turned an erroneous (E-6) throw to first into a full trip around the base path, ....to score. It was the start of an 8 run inning that generated a cushion that Numb managed to maintain for the rest of the game. CJ had trouble with handling the ball (true, the outfield was very wet and slick) as Numb batters placed hit after hit into the creases and seams of the defense. And even when, in desperation, CJ shifted most of their players to the right side of the field to stop lefty-batting Jeff William's line shots, he found holes to pop the ball. Numb did this mostly during the 1st and fourth innings. Most notably, Stan "the Mahn" Robinson posted a 4 for 4, BB performance. Also, as a final cap on the evening, Troy "Troytus" (replacing JT as the Numb player voted most likely to go blind from un-natural causes) Kaminsky, seeing the CJ left fielder challenging him to hit it over his head, did just that. And not by a little bit. The hapless, although speedy, CJ fielder was in full retreat as the ball was still climbing as it past over his head.
Numb pitching and defense frustrated CJ for most of the game with good field coverage and controlled ball handling. When CJ got to their final at-bats, they succumbed to the hated "10 Run rule". But at the point it was invoked by the official, CJ was happy to be done with it. Final Score 22-6. And in fitting fashion, Ed made the last out, to relieving Young Bradley of the responsibility.
To Connie!!!!

October 6, 2005 Game 1
Numb's first game in the doubleheader pitted them against Cary Johnson Construction, a tough team of very good players who always seem to have an added extra someone for our games. Tonight, they had a guy who had to be reminded that he starts with a 1-1 count. Can you say 'ringer'? I knew you could. Numb starts out well, scoring 4 in the top of the first and has a 6-3 lead after 2. The thing about CJC, is that they always seem to score, every inning, even if they start off with 2 outs. They are young, fast and great hitters. We hate them. Numb's feast or famine batting puts them in a 8-7 hole in the top of the 6th. But the feast starts, Numb scores 6 runs and holds CJC to no runs in the bottom of the 6th, as time expires, for a 13-8 win!
Leading hitters were Jeff 'Papa Crush' Williams, 4-4, 2 triples!, 2 runs, 2 rbis, Rootbeer Haley, 3-4, 2 runs, 3 rbis, Numbmaster, 2-3, run, 2 rbis, Troy-tus, 2-3, 2 runs, Brad the Younger, 2-3, 2 runs, Stan the Man, 2-4, triple, 2 runs, 2 rbis, Coach Eddie, 2-4, run, 2 rbis, and JT, 2-4. One hit wonders were Big Art, rbi and Dave Hunn, run.
Big Art made the last out of the game, but since its the first game of a double header, the penalty remains TBA...

October 6, 2005 Game 2
Fresh from the stunning come-from-behind victory over Cary Johnson Construction, Numb faces the Goats. No problem? After 2 innings, Numb has a 3-0 lead. Then the wheels come off, and I mean totally. In an excruciating inning, consisting of walks, at least 5 errors, dinks, and squibs, Numb gives up 9 runs to the Goats to trail 9-3. Numbs third consists of 3 pitches, 3 outs, as the Goats are determined to keep the lead, playing good defense. The next 3 innings have Numb slowly coming back, but unable to take the lead until the bottom of the 6th, at 11-10. As time is running out, Numb batters are being patient as the Goats pitcher is slinging balls as fast as he can, with no regard to batter readyness. So, as Numb is retired, the ruling is that a new inning will be played. Numb tradition is that whatever is worst for us, will be the ruling. The Goats manage to tie the game in the top of the 7th, 11-11. Numb's 7th starts with Eddie walking, JT flies out. Art erases Ed on a fielders choice, 2 outs, runner on first. Looks like tiebreaker. But wait, Hannaman walks, Ed runs for him. Dave Hunn singles sharply to left, Art chugs around third and scores uncontested! Numb wins!!
Leading hitters were, again, Jeff 'Papa Crush' Williams, 3-3, 2 runs, 5 rbis (thats 7-7 in the two games!), Rootbeer Haley, 3-3, double, 2 runs, (not too shabby 6-7 in the two games), Brad the Younger, 2-3, double, 3 runs, 2 rbis, Numbmaster, 2-3, 2 rbis, Stan the Man, 2-3, rbi, Coach Eddy, 2-4, and Newest Dave, 2-4, run, game winning rbi. One hit wonders were Big Art, game winning run, and Troy-tus.
In true Numb tradition, Big Art, he of the game winning run, made the last out of the game. You may recall he made the last out of the first game, too. I guess there is no question as who will bring the beer next week! In celebration of our winning double header, JT generously had pizza delivered to the dugout (the pizza arrived before the second win, how did he know?) and with Hannaman's excellent refreshments, even Ed was seen to smile! Connie was toasted, and all was well in the land of Numb...
Note: I will not be here next week, so the TBA game time will not be posed!! Check your e-mail or call Jay!

In stark contrast to last week, Numb smacks the ball, plays defense and rolls over the hapless Souls, 21-3. Numb had a suprise special guest in none other than Numbster-for-life Ron 'Junior' Medoza! Since his Angels clinched the American League West title, he decided to head over and suprise Numb. Since he hadn't played in almost two years, we naturally had him play! A great time was had by all. Leading hitters in the game were Brad the Younger, 4-4, 2 doubles, 4 runs, 3 rbis, Numbmaster, 4-4, double, triple, 3 runs, 3 rbis, Dave 'No More Stinking Penalty Shirt' Hunn, 3-3, run, rbi, Rootbeer haley, 3-4, 4 runs, rbi, Coach Eddie, 3-4, run, JT, 3-4, run, 2 rbis, Troy 2-3, 2 runs, rbi, and Big Art, 2-4, run. One hit wonders were Stan the Man, double, run, 3 rbis, Hannaman, 2 runs, rbi, and special guest Ron 'Junior' Mendoza, run, rbi.
Hannaman made the last out of the game, so beer quality will improve dramatically! New week is a tough, tough doubleheader against Cary Johnson Contruction and the Goats. Does that mean Hanna has to bring double beer and the last out of game 1 pays him???

12 Numbsters show up for this game, hitting goes south, but defense does the job and Numb makes 4 runs count in a 4-3 win over No Use For A Name. The game might have been called No Use For A Bat, as both teams can't get the key hit. Numb scores one in the first, one in the second, and 2 in the third and hangs on with some good defense. It is interesting to note that Numb errors and walks helped our opponests score. Two Numb defensive plays won the game. In the late innings, a NUFAN batter smashed a ball with a runner on first. Rootbeer Haley caught the runner off third and got him in a pickle that the Numbmaster botched with a bad throw. As the runner scored, the batter was caught off third and tagged out. In the bottom of the 7th, two on and two out, the batter lined to shortstop, game over, right? Well, the ball pops out of Rootbeer Haley's glove, but he tracks it down and flips backhanded to Papa Williams at second for the third out and the win.
Leading hitters were Rootbeer Haley, 2-2, run, Numbmaster, 2-3, rbi, Stan the Man Robinson, 2-3, rbi, and 'Penalty Shirt' Dave, 2-3, rbi. One hit wonders were Papa Williams, run, JT, Big Art, triple, run, Hanaman, and Dale Roweberry. There were 3 0-fers. Brad the Younger made the last out of the game.
Dave Hunn FINALLY brought the beer and took his punishment (the wearing of the Numb Penalty Shirt, front and back) like a man, or at least a Numbster! Good job Dave, all is forgiven...

Numb starts off with only 10, but wait, Dave is 'sick' (sick of bringing the beer, as he didn't make any covering arrangements, a penalty shirt violation if there ever was!), Jeff is a no show (turns out he sent an e-mail after I left work and tried to get a sub), so Numb is down to 8 players. Who Let the Dads Out only has 9, and is playing the second game of a double header. In the end, Numb manages an 11-7 victory, based on, wait for it, defense! The Dads had bases loaded, no outs and did not score! Coach Eddie took a hit from a former Aggie football player (dude is BIG!) for a third out, force out at third. Stan the Man, Big Art, and Dale, our outfielders, histled, backed up each other, and made plays. Rootbeer Haley and the Numbmaster finally perfected the short to second/first baseman force out. Winning pitcher Steve Hanna kept the ball inside to give the fielders a chance and induced some key popouts. With only 8 players, each Numbster got a lot of atbats and hit well enough to win.
Leading hitters were Numb Elders, Numbmaster, 3-4, 2 walks, 2 runs, Hannaman, 3-4, walk, run, rbi, and Coach Eddie, 4-6, 2 rbis. Other notables were Dale Roweberry, 3-5, 2 runs, Rootbeer Haley, 3-6, double, 3 runs, 2 rbis, Stan the Man Robinson, 2-5, rbi and Troy 'No Official Nickname Yet' Komiski, 2-5, double, 2 runs. The solo one hit wonder was Big Art, rbi. Coach Eddie made the last out of the game. Jeff's e-mail absolves him of the penalty shirt, but consensus was having Dave wear the shirt, not for missing the game, but for not bringing the beer! Oh, and bringing food to the next game to compliment Ed bringing the beer. Pizza was the favorite suggestion... Dave?

Numb start off Fall with only 10. Alan 'Hoover' Titche is out for the season. Turns out that even as he was delivering the season winning hit, he had fractured ribs! Chaba the Hutt is also out for the season with an injury. Brad and Jeff were also missing. Gladly, this night was the return of Stan 'the Man' Robinson, back from his summer of doing whatever he does! Though changed, Numb does not miss a beat, taking care of the Unknown 13-4. The Unknown threatened many times, but Numb defense managed to make the needed plays.
Leading hitters were Rootbeer Haley, 3-3, 2 runs, Numbmaster, 3-4, 3 rbis, and Dale Roweberry, 3-4, 2 runs, rbi. Going 2-4 were JT, triple, 2 runs, Stan the Man, triple, 3 runs, and Newest Guy Dave, home run, 2 runs, 4 rbis. One hit wonders were Big Art, Coach Eddie, run, rbi and Hannaman, run, rbi. In true Numb fashing, and really, it kind of brings a tear to my eye, Newest Guy Dave, despite hitting the snot out of the ball, made the last out of the game. **sniff**. Numb karma never lets anyone get a big head, well expect for those who come to Numb with one...
