Game Summaries:
August 18, 2005
A cool August night. Numb faces Cary Johnson construction for the title. Note that this version of Cary
Johnson had many different players than the version we faced three weeks ago. Games starts off badly, as a
CJ player crushes a ball over the fence for a 1-0 lead. Good news, thats the only one that can go out until
we hit one out. Odds of that: low! CJ builds a 4-0 lead as Numb has trouble scoring, but in the bottom of
the third, with two outs, the hits come and Numb tallies 7 to lead 7-4. Then CJ, again with two outs, puts
up 4 to lead 8-7, mostly because Numb throws the ball around allowing runners to go to second. Remember,
these youngins are fast! Then, defensive play of the game. In the late innings, with CJ threatening, a runner
goes from first to third, Art, ignoring yells of 'second base' throws to third. Jeff, playing third, acts as
if the ball is on its way to second. The base coach, seeing Jeff, tells the runner 'no throw'. Ball
arrives at third, JW scoops, tags, OUT! Saved at least one run. So down 10-7, Numb bats in the bottom of the
seventh. Not having scored but in the third inning, tension ensues. But, the Numbsters come through, as the
first 5 batters get on, and 2 score. Tying run scores a batter later, then Alan hits the game winning hit
to right, scoring Craig with the winning run! The Numbsters win the pennant!! Hot dogs were grilled, beer and
chips were consumed and I thought I saw Ed smile!
Leading hitters were Big Art, 3-3, triple, 2 rbis, Troy 'I need a nickname' Komisky, 3-3, triple, 2 runs, and
Jeff 'Deke' or 'Mr. RBI' Williams, 3-4, run, 4 rbis. Going 2-4 with 2 runs, were the Haley twins, Brad and
Craig. One hit wonders were many, Numbmaster, run, rbi, Coach Eddie, run, rbi, Newest Dave, rbi, and JT,
run, rbi. Two unnamed Numbies ended the 2 week stretch of all Numbsters getting at least one hit.
The Numbmaster made the last out of the game, as the game ended on the winning run.
With no games until after Labor Day, Numb can rest, relax and enjoy a fine summer championship!
See you in the fall!
August 11, 2005
Numb faces their 'daddy' No Use For A Name. The game starts badly, with NUFAN scoring 4 runs in the top
of the first, seemingly at will. Numb scratches out 2, as NUFAN gets one back in the top of the second,
to lead 5-2. Then, something happened, as Numb bats come alive and by the time the dust settles, 12 Numbsters
have crossed the plate, and Numb leads 14-5 and never looks back to smack NUFAN, 24-7. For the second week
in a row, every Numbster hits. Leading hitters were Rootbeer Haley, 2-2, 3 runs, 2 rbis, Newest Dave, 3-4,
double, 3 runs, 2 rbis, Brad the Younger, 2-3, 3 runs, Mr. Williams, 2-3, triple, 2 runs, 4 rbis, Coach Eddie,
2-3, 3 runs, rbi, and Troy, 2-3, run, rbi. Going 2-4 were Numbmaster, 2 runs, Big Art, run, rbi and Hannaman,
run. The two one hit wonders were JT, double, 2 runs, 4 rbis, and Dale, run, rbi. Hannaman made the last out
of the game for the surging Numbsters.
Next week, Cary Johnson Construction, who always seems to have 'high quality' players when the title is on the
line.
August 4, 2005
One day after the Numbmaster is a year older, Numb faces the Goats, and, well, hits the ball! Every Numbster
registers at least one hit as Numb romps 17-7. Leading the hit parade were Dale, 4-4, double, 2 runs, 3 rbis,
Jeff 'Nearly Papa' Williams, 3-3, 3 runs, 7 rbis, Rootbeer Haley, 2-2, 3 runs, 3 walks, Coach Eddie,
2-4, 2 runs, 3 rbis, Brad the Younger, 2-4, 3 runs, Alan, 2-4, run. One hit wonders were Numbmaster, 2 runs,
JT, 2 rbis, Hannaman, and Troy, run, rbi. Alan made the last out of the game. The win puts Numb in a 3
way tie for first place, with a position game next week against No Use For a Name, a team that owns Numb.
In other matters, it seems we have additional information on our run fiasco of June 23. As JT so elequently
puts it in his e-mail:
The City (Jerry Lee) checked with Softball National (of some sort) and.....THE RUN DOESN'T COUNT.
So we are vindicated
July 28, 2005
The game started with a shudder, as Cary Johnson Construction put men on via defensive gaffes. But Numb
defense rebounds and we get out of the inning with no runs scored. Meanwhile, Numb grabs the lead and
never lets go, shutting out the powerful CJC and winning, 14-0. Leading Numb again was Bradley the Younger
4-4, 2 doubles, 2runs, 2 rbis, Jeff Williams, 3-4, triple, 2 runs, 3 rbis, JT, 3-4, run, rbi, Big Art 2-3,
rbi, Coach Eddie, 2-4, run, 2 rbis and Rootbeer Haley, 2-5, 3 runs, rbi. One hit wonders were Alan, 2 runs,
Dave, 2 rbis, and Troy, 2 runs. Dale made the last out of the game and negotiations continued after the game
for beer.
July 21, 2005
Numb faces the Souls. Numb beats the Souls, 15-8. Although our defense exhitbited some flaws (actually
a couple of jaw-dropping miscues), we hit and took advantage of Souls errors. JT lead the way, breaking
out of his Summer sesaon funk, going 4-4, with 2 triples, a double, 3 runs, 2 rbis. Bradley the Younger was
4-4, home run, 2 doubles, 3 runs, rbi, Newest Dave, 3-3, run, 4 rbis, Hannaman, 2-3, 2 ribs and Big Art went
2-4, 3 runs. One hit wonders were Rootbeer Haley, 2 runs, Numbmaster, run, 3 rbis, Troy, and Dale, run. Troy made the last
out of the game.
July 14, 2005
Numb loses a nail-biter against the Unknown, 9-5. The game was a pitcher's duel early on, tied 0-0 after
three innings. Numb defense was stellar in the early going, turning double plays, nailing runners on the
basepaths. Then a couple of unlucky breaks turned the tide, allowing the Unknown to score. Offesne,
meanwhile, struggled, hitting the ball hard, but right at the defense. The pitcher for the Unknown snagged
two line drive smashes, and the third baseman took away at least 4 hits.
Leading hitters were Jeff Williams, 3-4, double, 2 runs, Brad the Younger, 2-3, run, and Numbmaster, 2-4,
rbi. One hit wonders were the returning Rootbeer Haley, run, rbi, Big Art, rbi, Dave, and Hannaman, rbi.
JT made the last out of the game.
July 7, 2005
Numb wins a nail-biter against Total Chaos 7-5. Both teams could not get the key hit, and left a lot
of runners on base. Brad made a great diving catch to end the game, as Chaos was threatening to tie.
Leading hitters were Coach Eddie (who also did it with his glove), 2-2, run, 2 rbis, Mr. Williams, 2-3,
run, Big Art, 2-3, 2 runs, rbi, and Hannaman, 2-3. One hit wonders were Brad, run, rbi, Alan, rbi, Dave,
double, rbi, Chaba de Hutt, run and Troy. 0-fers were both JT and Numbmaster, sadly enough. In true
Numb good and bad, Brad made the last out of the game.
June 30, 2005
One week after the great umpiring fiasco, Numb meets the Ice Men and in a ragged contest, manages to
prevail, 12-7. Seems like Numbsters got lots of hits or none at all. Leading hitters were Brad
the Younger, 4-5, double, 2 runs, 3 rbis, Newest Dave, 3-4, 2 runs, the resurgent Hannaman, 3-4, 2 runs,
rbi, the equally resurgent Chaba the Hutt, 3-4, run, rbi, the hardly resurgent Numbmaster, 2-3, 2 rbis,
and Big Art, 2-4, 3 runs. One hit wonders were Mr. Williams 2 runs, rbi, Dale, rbi and JT.
Chaba made the last out of the game after being doubled off second.
June 23, 2005
In one of the most stunningly wrong umpire decisions I have seen in 38 years of organized ball,
Nunb falls 12-11 to No Use For a Name. With Numb down 11-10, NUFAN at bat, bases loaded, two outs,
the batter grounds to third. Eddie fields the ball, tags the runner from second before he reaches
third, inning over. No run, right? The umpires rule that since the play was a "tag play", the run
counts because the runner reached home before the tag occured. Our question, how does the fact that
the runner is in a force situation change with the decision of the player to tag him?? So if Ed
touched third instead of tagging him, that magically changes the situation??? Even the players
on NUFAN were amazed!! Anyway, down 12-10, Numb only manages one run in the midst of the arguement
and when NUFAN goes up to bat to start the top of the seventh, the game is mysteriously called on
time before the first pitch is thrown.
Leading hitters were Coach Eddie, 2-2, run, Troy (Not Named After the Park) Komisky, 2-2, run, rbi,
Mr. Williams, 3-4, 2 runs, rbi, Big Art, 2-4, run, rbi, and Dale, 2-4, triple, 2 runs, rbi.
One hit wonders were Brad the Younger, run, 2 rbis, Numbmaster, run, Alan, run, and Chaba de Hutt, run.
I don't usually post 0-fers, but JT does, so draw your own conclusions. Dale made the last out of the
game and will pay someone to bring beer?
Update: Ed called in the protest and Davis City League officials agreed with us, however, they called
the head of ASA umpires for Sacramento and he agreed with the call! Now most rule books state a force is
tagging the base or the runner as this excerpt from the USSSA rulebook - 'A FORCE OUT is when a runner is
tagged by a fielder with the ball (while on or off a base) or fielder holds the ball on the base to which
a runner is forced to advance before the runner can reach that base and before any succeeding runner
is put out'. This agrees with every other baseball or softball league in the world! Its interesting to note
that if a runner fails to tag thrid on their way home and the play is correctly appealed, that it is considered
a force play and the runner scoring from third before runner from second is not counted!! The investgation
continues, but our appeal is kaput.
