Game Summaries:
August 14, 1997
Numb puts on a good show, but falls to Winning Ugly, 16-14. Down early 6-0, Numb rallies to lead 11-9 until the 7th when Ugly scores 7 runs. Key errors by Numb early helped Ugly score all the runs they would need. The top 5 Numb hitters collect 18 hits, while the bottom 5 manage only 4. Timmy continues his torrid streak, again going 5-5 with 3 runs and 2 rbis. Junior follows going 4-4 with a double, triple, 2 runs and 5 rbis. 3 hit Numbsters include Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 4 runs, 'Big Dog' (I hate that nickname, by the way) Silva, 3 rbis, and JT 1 run, 1 rbi. Hanna Man managed 2 hits to lead the bottom 5. The Secret Senator weakly fouled out for the last out with 2 runners on, and will buy the beer. Only one game remains in Summer.

How does Numb spell relief? S-O-U-L-S!! Numb finds offense, defense, pitching and base running in crushing the hapless Souls, 29-4. No, that is not a typo. Numb smashes 34 hits in all, with Timmy, Junior and the Secret Senator leading the way, each going 5-5. The Secret Senator's stats come with an asterisk, as post-game speculation centered on an error changed to a hit. 3 hit Numbsters include Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 3-3 with a triple, 3 runs and 4 rbis, Ripper, Chaba and New Guy Dave. 2 hitters were JT, Coach Eddie and Hanna Man. Only one Numbster got only one hit, yours truely. New Guy Dave was kind enough to make the last out, getting me off the hook.

Numb, fresh from a week off, scores 13 runs in the first two innings, unfortunately, they only score one more and lose 20-14 to the Rug Munchers. This also marked the second game in a row where Numb loses to a team that fields a woman, casting aspersions on our collective manhood. Timely hits, bobbles, walks, mental errors and poor execution combined to defeat Numb, who really need a softball type hug at this point in the season. Mark Hinman and Junior powered the offense, and I was too disgusted to collect any stats, having made the final out. Hopefully, a Numb that can hit, field and pitch will show up next week.
July 17, 1997
Numb, playing like a team that has just been introduced to the game, flounders its way to a 14-6 loss to the Moon Dogs. Coach Eddie was the only real man, collecting 3 hits. Defense was a sham, offense was offensive, baserunning was laughable and even the umpires blew calls. Otherwise, we didn't do too bad!! Sure, we had some players out of position, but no excuses were made as a dejected Numb, with a week off, vowed to return to winning ways by drinking Chaba's beer in two weeks.
July 10, 1997
Numb stomps Calgene with a remarkable combination of good defense and annoying pop fly hits. Offense was the catch of the day, as every Numster recorded at least one hit. Leaders were Timmy, 3-4, Junior 3-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs, and Chaba, 3-4, 1 run. 2 hit Numbsters included Silva, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, Hanna, 2 RBIs and Hinman, 1 run. On a sad note, 'the Franchise' Watari, made his first out in 15 at bats, missing the Numb consecutive hit record by 2 (he also walked). Coach Eddie ended 3 innings with outs, including the beer frame.
July 3, 1997
Numb, hopefully tuning up for the 4th of July Tournament, scorched Safeway 15-3. With a makeshift lineup that saw gimpy Numbsters playing strange positions, Numb defense and offense combined for a total package game. Safeway scored 3 runs in the top of the first and was held scoreless by the stingy Numb defense the rest of the way. The Secret Senator, making a rare outfield appearance, played flawless defense along with the rest of the outfield.
Numb offense was again powered by Mike 'the Franchise' Watari who lived up to his monniker (and is batting 1.000!) going 4-4 with 2 doubles, 4 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Mike Silva showed signs of life, going 3-4, with a double, a rare triple, 4 RBIs and Coach Eddie went 3-3 with a double, 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Timulator and Ripper each had 2 hits. Mark Hinman made the last out, and is Mr. Beer next week...
June 26, 1997
Numb, fueled by the return of Junior (who K'd twice!) and the Secret Senator and the fact that Mike Silva forgot to bring the beer, found their bats and their eyes and turned 9 walks and a number of hits into 17 runs for a 17-6 thrashing of Requiem.
Mike 'the Franchise' Watari again led Numb with 3 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Timmy went 3-3 with a double, JT ripped 3 hits and 'New Guy' Dave and Coach Eddie each had 2 hits. Defense was solid, except for Silva turning the routine into a thrilling. Numb nailed 2 runners on the bases and also managed to hit their cutoff men much more often than usual.
The game ended with Numb at bat, so the Secret Senator, who made the last out the inning before, is on line for the beer. Hopefully his memory is better than mine...
June 19, 1997
Numb continues their tournament batting style and fall, wimpering, 12-3 to Winning Ugly.
We managed to load the bases in the first inning with no outs and NOT SCORE.
Lazy pop flys again plagued all of Numb except for Mike 'the Franchise'
Watari who went 4 for 4. Mike Silva connected for a bases loaded double for
2 RBIs, (everyone was so amazed that the ball travelled out of the infield, that they forgot to run!) and 'New Guy' Dave lofted a sac fly for the other. The inept hitting
prompted Coach Eddie, in a rare display of total bewilderment, to comment that
'It must be the pitcher'. If only it was! Numb will try again next week, fresh
from the batting cages and drinking Silva's beer, who made the last out, albiet
a well hit one.
