Game Summaries:

June 11, 1998
Going into the game final game of the spring (??!!!) season, Numb had a chance to secure first place. They had to beat Altered Minds by more runs (5) than Minds had beaten Numb earlier in the season. Conspicuously missing from the Numb line-up was the batting power house of Mike Bigdog Silva. Still, Numb bats initially rose to the occasion, with all Numbies recording at least one hit, and nine Numbies hitting over .500.
Jumping to a 10-5 lead, Numb held on to a five point spread into the fourth inning, 11-6. 2 for 3 performances by Timmah and the Senator, and 2 for 4 showings by Ronnyah, Kippy, Da Bulge (playing with a shoulder injury), Da Hut, Hannaman, Da Pirate, and Mr. Cowan all contributed to the solid lead. New-Guy-Dave and Da Franchise showed for one hit each.
However, the Minds were allowed back into the game on four throwing errors equally divided between the usually solid Mike "I-just-got-married" Watari, and the not nearly as solid Kippy the Kipmiester. Numb proceeded to slip into a 12-13 deficit by the end of the sixth, the demise being halted on a spectacular (so they tell me) 3-1 play ending the Minds scoring romp. In that play, Steve Da Hannaman Hanna dug out a hard, short-hopping line drive, only to end his Herculean effort with his massive body sprawled across the right side of the infield. In an unusual display of deft and skill, pitcher JT bolted (!?!) to cover the bag now voided by the Hannaman's departure. Hanna's presence of mind directed his perfect throw to the covering JT to effect the out, ending the inning, and stopping Mind's momentum. Miraculously, "Time" was not called at that point, and Numb was allowed to move into the 7th and final inning.
Lead off batters of Ed the Bulge, Secret Senator, and Chaba the Hut resulted in two outs, with one on. Hannaman (now called "Hanna-the Manly-man") socked a solid single, leaving Numb with two men on, two outs, one run down, with JT coming up to bat. Now, I am not sure you fully understand the pressure that is coming to bear on our Numby coming up to bat. With an unsuccessful battery, JT could: 1) lose the game, 2) lose the bid for a three way tie for first place, 3) continue his batting slump into the next season, and most importantly 4) end up in the Numb archives as the undisputed owner of the "beermiester" record with 5 "last out" beer duties in one season (over .500 for beer in a season). The P-R-E-S-S-U-R--E was on our pirate. ...But, with the stroke of the bat, JT hit his signature center shot zipping past the pitcher, sending home the tying run. Then, Mr. Mark Cowan came up and tagged another well hit ball, scoring Numb's go ahead run!! Sadly, although not for JT, New Guy Dave is the Beermiester for next season's kick-off game. Moving to the bottom of the 7th, JT pitched a tight set of high and inside pitches to a generally gawking set of Mind's batters. This pitching duel resulted in two fly and one ground out, ...and Numb won the game 14-13.
Sadly, as Numb didn't beat Altered Minds by five runs, we don't get first place bragging rights. Still, we ended the spring season with a respectable 6-3 record, and a moral victory, as the first three places had the same 6-3 record.
In addition to the traditional beers, the game was followed by a cocktail party with a tastefully displayed, array of cheeses, salami, crackers, vegetables, chips and dips provided by "Pirates Like Us" ballpark caterers.
Update by JT, as if you didn't know by the length!

Numb avenges an earlier loss to Rounding 3rd, pounding out 23 hits en route to a 18-7 rout. Solid defense and timely hitting kept Numb out of trouble and in charge of the game. For the second time this year, everyone in the lineup got at least one hit. Accolcades are too numerous to mention, but I will anyway.
With 'the Francise' missing in action due to his pending wedding, Coach Eddie picked up the slack, going 3-3, 1 run, 1 RBI. Junior went 4-5, with 2 runs and 2 RBIs, Hanna-man and Silva went 3-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and 3 runs, 2 RBIs repectively. Timmy and the Ripper went 3-5, with a double, 3 runs and 2 RBIs for Tim and 2 runs, 1 RBI for Kip. Mark Cowin (who played a solid third) and the Secret Senator (holding down Watari's shortstop position) each went 2-4, with 1 run, 1 RBI each. Chaba and JT, each collected one hit.
The game ended with Numb at bat (quite a change), but JT had made the only out in the inning so is the last out. This sets a new Numb record (previously held by Hanna) with 4 beer frames in one season.

El Nino wins again. Rained out.

Numb sucks. No, not the title of the next Pamela Anderson movie, but a succinct review of Numb's current sofball play. Numb falls to Altered Minds 15-10 in an error filled, flaccid bat game. Numb offense was sporadic, with rallies killed left and right. Uncharacteristic walks and errors also contribued to Numb's defeat.
Perfect hitting Numbsters were Coach Eddie, a manly 3-3, Timmy, continuing his hot streak, 2-2, 1 run, 3 RBIs, and New Guy Dave broke through 2-2, with 2 runs and 1 RBI. Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, who finally made the last out of the game, went 2-3, with 2 runs and Numbs lone extra base hit, a double. Just avoiding poo-poo girly-man status with one hit each were Ripper, Junior, JT, and Silva.
Numb must search deep down for inspiration and regroup after now losing 3 in row. Its a little too soon for Ouzo, but drastic measures may be needed if the slide continues. Perhaps the thought of enjoying Mike's beer will trigger an attitude adjustment.

A break in the rain and Kip's birthday. Coach Eddie coaxed Mark 'the Quiv' Hirzy out of retirement and recriuted yet another coworker (although suprisingly NOT named Dave) Karlton 'Your Doorman' to bolster the depleted Numb lineup. Numb celebrates by falling to Rounding Third, 9-7. Offense was the weak link, scoring 5 runs in the first inning then only scratching out 2 runs the rest of the game.
Offense was lead by Hanna-Man, who went 3-3 with 1 RBI. 'the Timulator' went 2-2 with 1 run, 2 RBIs. The Mikes (Watari and Silva) went 2-3, with 'the Franchise' scoring twice, and socking a triple, while the 'Big Dog' notched a RBI. Junior, the Ripper, and Coach Eddie each got one hit. The 'Quiv' made the last out, so the one responsible for his presence, Coach Eddie, will bring the beer.
After the game, Kip's lovely wife Anne, provided tri-tip sandwiches and chocolate cake for Numb in honor of the birthday boy. Jay supplied the Ouzo and the evening's loss faded in a blissful haze of meat, chocolate and alcohol.

On another blustery (OK, windy!) spring evening, Numb graciously spots the Pack Rats a 12-2 lead before waking up. Alas, the Numbback fell short as Numb falls 13-11. A definite lack of breaks, a dropped ball here, an errant throw, a missed double play, plus the Rat's hitting, resulted in Numb's first loss.
Offensively, Numb waited a bit too long before scoring. Numb was lead by Junior, who went 3-3 with an impressive home run and 2 runs, 4 RBIs. Hanna Man and 'New Guy' Dave went 2-3, with Dave scoring 2 runs. The Mikes (Watari and Silva) went 2-4, with 'the Franchise' scoring twice, 1 RBI while your humble webmaster had a run and RBI. Ending the Numb comeback with a weak flyout, the aforementioned webmaster is also the beermaster.

On a blustery spring evening, Numb spots the kids (who were so young, Junior remarked that they were younger than him!) a 7-0 first inning lead then wakes up to win 14-10. Lets put it this way, Numb ties the game 7-7, with NO HITS! Offense was 'lead' by 3 Numbsters who collected 2 hits each, 'The Franchise' 2 runs, 3 RBIs, Timmy, 1 run and RBI and Junior, 2 runs, RBI and Numb's only extra base hit, a double. Six Numbsters collected one hit each and 'New Guy' Dave got none. Stangely, (some say 'cosmic justice' others say 'cosmic joke') JT made the last out for the third time this year and will yet again bring beer. But hey, we are 4-0!

Rained out.

Numb offense erupts to mangle the hapless Souls, 21-8. Sure, some will say that the Souls only had 3 outfielders and they made errors, but we HIT!!

Mike 'the Franchise' Watari and Junior both homered, Chaba, Secret Senator (making his Spring debut) and even the slow footed Silva tripled. Leading hitters were (bear with me, this will be long!) 'Big Dog' 3-3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, double, triple. 4 Numbsters went 3-4, 'the Franchise' HR, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, Ripper, 4 runs, double, Secret Senator, 2 runs, 3 RBIs, triple, Chaba 'the Hutt', 2 runs, RBI, triple. Hanna-Man and Coach Eddie went 2-3 (not combined, each!), with 1 RBI, walk and 2 runs, double respectively. Mark Cowin, JT and Junior each collected one hit.

Defensively, Numb played well enought not to blow a double digit lead. The game was stopped in mid-atbat, leaving JT on the line for the beer.

April 9, 1998
Numb goes to extra innings to defeat Calgene, 11-10. Numb defense, remarkably good for Spring, had only a one-inning lapse where Calgene scored 3 runs.

Numb offense was dominated by Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, who lived up to his name by going 5-5, scoring 3 runs, and knocking in 3, including the game winner. Going 2-3 were Coach Eddie, 2 runs, JT, 1 run, 1 RBI, and Chaba, 1 run. Timmy and yours truely went 2-4 with Tim collecting a tiple, 2 RBIs and scoring once while I got 2 RBIs. Junior, who made it known he took 2 walks for the team, went 1-1 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

Defensively, 'Newest Guy' Dave made his debut and shone at second base, making a diving stop and turning a sweet double play. Ailing 0-fer Mark Cowin made the last out and must bring the beer.

Numb wins Spring opener!! In a stunning development, Numb meets an even more unprepared Jo's Heroes and triumphs 11-6. 10 Numb runs in the first two innings proved to be the difference.

Numb was lead by the Ripper, 3-3, a double, 2 runs, RBI, Mike 'the Francise' Watari, 3-4, 2 runs, Chaba, 2-2, triple, 1 run, 4 RBIs and Hanna Man, 2-3, 1 run, 1 RBI. All other Numbsters got one hit each with 'New Guy' Dave's triple, and Timmy's double highlights.

Defensively, Chaba 'the Hutt' shone and combined with his offensive performance raised speculation that this could be his breakout year. Winning pitcher JT made the last out and must bring the first 'out' beers of the year.
