NUMB WINS (a piece of) THE PENNANT!!!! NUMB WINS (a piece of) THE PENNANT!!!

The 20th Anniversary Season is turning out to be quite a season to be Numb. Numb, coming into the game at a proud 7-1 to Asian Auto's perfect record (8-0), was an underdog looking to bite someone. However, the dogs of summer had ravaged the team down to 8 regular members. Numb had to look deep into their lair for replacements, finding former Numbies Mark "the Quiv" Hirzy, and (sadly) Steve "I have to wear the Penalty Shirt (the Lout)" Bechtold.

As the underdogs, and therefor the visitors in this conference final, Numb had first bats. And in true Numb style, we came out hitting. Three hits and three errors combined to give Numb 5 runs in the first inning, which would put us in a position to win. Coach Eddy pulled off a brilliant management coup by batting Chaba at lead-off. Chaba lead the Numb bats, posting a perfect 4x4, triple, game. Along with New Guy Dave (3x4, triple), and JT's (2x3, walk) strong plate appearances, the Numbies used a few Asian errors and great aggressive base running, to keep adding to their score. Timmah, the "Quiv" (both 1x3), Watari the Franchise, Coach Eddy, and Alan (all 1x4), each garnered a hit. Sadly, that lout, Steve Bechtold, and Hanna-man both went hitless, although Bechtold made up for it with fine defense.

However, Numbmandment #17 says, "No lead is safe with Numb, and you should play accordingly". Asian Auto responded with a number of hits, but weakly, as JT pitched a stellar, deep inside corner game (no brag, just fact!), and Numb defense, lead by Alan and The Franchise, as well as the entire outfield crew, thwarted Asian's attempt to get a rhythm at the bat. Then Numb exploded in the fifth inning, with 6 runs, bolstering their lead to 14-8, with one inning left. Asian started the bottom of the sixth strongly, looking as if they were going to post a valiant comeback, scoring two runs with one out bringing the score to 14 -10 Numb. But Numb defenders stranded 2 runners, ending the game with a Numb win and a shared, but arguable sole possession of, the D league pennant.

To Numb!!!! (To Connie!!!)

In all the excitement, no one checked to see who made the last out. That means that the "Ed pays" rule may be in effect next season…

Update provided by JT (as if it wasn't obvious). Snide comments in italics by your friendly neighborhood Numbmaster.

In a rematch against Calgene, Numb once again rides a big inning and solid defense to win 13-8. Steve Hanna, 3-3, 2 runs, rbi, Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 3-3, triple, 2 runs, rbi and Chaba 'the Hutt', 3-4, triple, 3 runs, 4 rbis lead the offense. Kip 'the Ripper' 2-3, triple, 2 runs, rbi and Coach Eddie, 2-4, run were the other multi-hit wonders. Numbmaster, JT and New Guy Dave each had one hit.
Defense was anchored by the solid play of New Guy Dave and the Ripper, each playing out of their normal positions. Chaba made the last out, his only out, on a hot line drive snagged by the pitcher.
Somehow, without a spectacular season, Numb improves to 7-1 and plays Asian Automotive for a share of first place. Credit masterful lineup shuffling by Coach Eddie in this 'Summer of the Replacements' to keep Numb on the winning track.

Numb plays good defense and hits to "10-run" Calgene 16-6 and take sole possesion of second place behind undefeated Asain Automotive. Leading the batting attack were Brent 'the Hitman' Mille, playing his last summer game for Numb, 4-5, double, triple, 4 runs, rbi, Numbmaster Silva, 4-5, double, 3 runs, 5 rbis and Kip 'the Ripper' Byars, 3-4, run. JT went 3-5, 3 runs, rbi, while Coach Eddie, Alan 'Hoover' Titche and Mike 'the Franchise' Watari each collected 2 hits. Stan 'the Man' Robinson rounded out the hitting with one hit.
This game marked a return of solid infield defense, with Alan, Watari and Coach Eddie contributing and displaced infielder Kippy making good plays in the outfield.
The game ended with Numb batting (stupid 10 run rule) and Alan made the last out of the inning. Numb meets Calgene again next week in a position game.

Just like the good old days, when we were good, Numb beats up on the hapless Souls, 14-1. Numb rides 6 walks, errors and 14 hits to victory, playing defense and turning back all Souls' 'rallies'. Stan 'the Man' played last weeks Coache Eddie clutch role and went 3-3, with 1 run and 4 rbis. Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 2-4, home run, run, 3 rbis and Numbmaster Silva, 2-4, were the only other hitters with more than one hit. Notable one hit wonders were, JT, double, 3 runs, Kip 'the Ripper' 3 runs, 2 rbis, Chaba 'the Hutt', 2 rbis, Timulator, Coache Eddie and Hanna-man, 2 runs each and Brent 'the Hitman'.
A rare decision by the umpire to extend play got Hanna-man off the hook for the last out of the game, and put Chaba on the hook.

Numb starts fast and posts a 4-0 lead against the 'new edition' Brew Crew (half the guys seem to be under 30!). Down 8-5 in the bottom of the last inning, Numb bats arise and Numb wins 9-8 with no outs!! Hearty, manly cheers all around. Numb was lead by Numbmaster Silva, 3-3, 2 runs, 2 rbis, Brent 'the Hitman' Mille, 3-4, double, triple, 3 runs, and Coach Eddie, coming through in the clutch with the game winner, and a combined 3-4, 4 rbis. Other notables were JT, 2-3, 2 runs, 2 rbis and Timmy, 2-4 rbi. New Guy Dave, Chaba, Hanna-man and the Franchise each collected one hit.
Defense was anchored by Mike 'the Franchise' Watari and Alan Titche, who earned the nickname 'Hoover' for his abilty to collect any ground ball hit to him! New Guy Dave made the last out of the second to the last inning, but it was the last out of the game.

With barely enough Numbsters to start the game (8), Numb breaks out the hitting sticks and beats AIM 24-7. With the arrival of 'the Franchise' while we were fielding, that made it an even 9 on 9 as both teams were short. Numb pounded out an astonishing 29 hits, played good defense and won handily. As you might expect, the offensive highlights are a bit lengthy, so here goes. Numb was lead by the late arriving Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 4-5, 3 runs, 3 rbis, home run, double, JT, 4-5, 2 runs, 4 rbis, triple and Numbmaster Silva, 4-5, 4 runs, 2 rbis, 2 doubles. More hits by Hanna-Man, 2-3, 3 runs, Coach Eddie, 3-5, 2 runs, 2 rbis, double, Alan, 3-5, 2 runs, 3 rbis, double, Mike Mille (Brent 'the Hitmans' brother who couldn't make it), 4-6, 4 runs, rbi, double, New Guy Dave, 3-6, 3 runs, 5 rbis, triple and Mark 'the Quiv' Hirzy, 2-4, 1 run.
New Guy Dave made the last out and will bring the fermented refreshments for the next game, which will be in 2 weeks.

Davis First Baptist Church doesn't have a prayer against Numb, and falls 25-8 to our onslaught. This begs the question, you know how athletes always thank God after victories ('God was with me today, He gave me the strength to get it done...'). Well, why don't they blame Him when they lose (God made me boot that grounder, He must have wanted them to win.)? But, I digress. Numb pounded out 23 hits, led by Kip 'the Ripper', 3-3, double, 4 runs, 3 rbis, Hanna-man, 3-3, 2 runs, rbi, and Brent 'the Hitman', 4-5, double, triple, 2 runs, 3 rbis. Numbmaster Silva and JT went 3-4, with a triple, 4 runs, rbi and 2 runs, rbi repectively. Rounding out the attack were Alan 2-3, 2 runs, Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 3-5, 2 runs 4 rbis, and Mark 'the Quiv' Hirzy, 2-4, 3 runs, 2 rbis.
Defense was pretty solid, except for one inning, but the offense more than made up for it. I, your humble Numbmaster made the last out and have to bring the beer for the next game.

Numb plays defense like the ball was a piece of the sun and loses to Asian Automotive (who, to their credit, didn't laugh TOO much!) 17-9. With the defense playing way below par, the offense was not up to the task, producing only 13 hits. Numbmaster Silva led the charge (shoulder is feeling better, thanks) 3-4, run, rbi, with JT, 2-3, run and Stan 'the Man' 2-3, 2 runs. Brent 'the Hitman' Mille went 2-4, run, rbi and late to arrive Timmy went 1-2, home run, run, 3 rbis. Coach Eddie, Chaba and Mike 'the Franchise' Watari each collected a hit.
Did I mention the sucky defense yet? Well, 'nuff said. I think Chaba made the last out, but I am not sure.

New Look Numb debuts with the Secret Senator gone for the season and JT gone for the game. More than capable subs were found and Numb wins ugly over more ugly Altered Minds, 11-8. Offensively, Numb was lead by long time Davis softballer Brent (the Ringer), 3-3, (NOTE: Lack of last names are my fault), Mike 'the Franchise' Watari, 3-4, triple, 3 runs, rbi, Chaba 'the Hutt', 2-3, triple, 2 runs, 2 rbis and Numbmaster Silva (been a while!), 2-3, 2 runs, 3 rbis. Timmy, the Ripper, Hanna-man, and super sub Stan 'the Man' each had one hit.
Defense was nothing to be proud of, although it was better than our opponent's defense. The Secret Senator, although not present, fulfilled his beer duties admirably, by individually labelling each brew and leaving us a note of encouragement for the summer season. Alan 'don't call me Borland' made the last out and in fine Secret Senator tradition, will provide the beer even though he will not attend the game. Thus, new traditions are made!!
