Genus Solidago Composite Family (Asteraceae/Compositae)
Goldenrod
(Solidago canadensis)
This is a native plant, but has become a nuisance in meadows and
along roadsides.
The plant may be somewhat toxic to livestock, and
the pollen is believed to cause allergies in many people.
It spreads by creeping roots (rhizomes) and also
by seeds, and is therefore very difficult to control.
The bright yellow flowers are very small, but numerous. They
commonly occur along just one side of an arched stem.
The flower heads have tiny ray flowers and also disk flowers.
