Wild Onion
(Allium acuminatum)

Wild onions were used as food by the native Americans and by the early settlers. The men of the Lewis and Clark expedition used them to add flavoring to their meat.

The species that occur in our area grow commonly on the dry gravelly hillsides. The plants are about 8 inches tall. They bloom in May and June.

Brandegee Onion
(Allium brandegei)

Another species of wild onion, in the same genus. The flower blossoms are lighter in color and are more open. Both species have the typical onion odor.
