Pinyon
(Pinus edulis)

The Pinyon Pine is the state tree of New Mexico.
The species name edulis means "edible", and refers to the very nutritious seeds. These were used by the native Americans as one of their most important food sources. The sticky resin also had many uses.

The needles on this tree usually occur in bundles of two, enclosed in a sheath at the base.
