    FAMILY HISTORY REPORT (letter)

Report to the Truman Family Organization - Aug 1,2000
Interesting Facts and Stories of our Truman Ancestors - Complied by Robert H. Goodwin

Even though our Truman ancestors were never famous in either their Church or personal lives, their life and stories are no less interesting than many of the more famous people with whom they were associated. Our Ancestors, including Jacob Mica Truman, Catherine Maxwell, Elizabeth Boyce, and her father George Boyce were all noble and great pioneers who suffered and sacrificed much to further the restoration of the Gospel. Here are some interesting facts, antidotes, and stories of our pioneer ancestors that I have compiled over the past few years. Each were not famous, or especially prominent in local affairs, but each were involved in some of the great events of the Church.

      Jacob Mica Truman
      • Jacob was baptized into the church at Nauvoo on June 10th, 1845 by Lyman Stoddard. Lyman Stoddard had been a missionary and church leader in the Michigan area, and knew Jacob’s family well. Jacob was not yet 20 years old when he joined the Church.
      • Jacob was ordained as a Seventy into the 30th Quorum of Seventies on his twentieth birthday - Aug 25, 1845.
      • Jacob Mica Truman was one of the youngest members of the Mormon Battalion. He enlisted on the 16th of July 1846 at Council Bluffs Iowa when he was not yet 21 years of age.
      • Despite being knocked off a horse or mule that he was trying to break, splitting his head wide open, and being left for dead by the surgeon for the Mormon Battalion. He was able to complete the whole march to California and back to Utah. Jacob carried a scar on his head which was five inches long and a half inch across for the rest of his life as a result of this accident.
      • While in the Mormon Battalion, Jacob’s assignment was to work with the cattle, and to help break in the new stock, when they were received.
      • Jacob was part of the party of Mormon Battalion members who opened the “Truckee Wagon Road” through the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the spring of 1848. This road later became the major route into California for many years.
      • Jacob was working at Sutter’s mill when Gold was discovered in California. He stayed the winter of 1847/48 in the area of Mormon Island and Sutter’s mill and panned for Gold. According to James S. Brown those who stayed were able to pan several hundred dollars worth of gold. When Jacob arrived in Salt Lake City, he gave a pouch of this gold to Brigham Young for use of the Church. The rest he used to help pay for the farm he bought in South Cottonwood.
      • Jacob’s farm in South Cottonwood was located where Bonneville Jr. High now sits. James S. Brown in his biography described Jacob’s farm as being on Big Cottonwood creek. Jacob’s farm in South Cottonwood was known as one of the outstanding homes and small farms in the district.
      • Jacob was a Captain in the “Nauvoo Legion”, the territorial militia of Utah. As early as 1850 he had been commissioned a Lieutenant. He was involved in several expeditions against the Indians during in the early 1850’s. During the Utah War of 1857 he served as a Captain.
      • When Brigham Young in 1862 called settlers to settle Utah’s Dixie in St. George, Jacob volunteered to go, rather than being called.
      Elizabeth Boyce
  • Elizabeth was sixteen when she came across the plains to Utah.
  • She married Jacob Mica Truman on her 18th birthday - 19 Apr 1849 - one of the first marriages in the Salt Lake Valley.
  • Elizabeth was set apart at age 19 as a midwife and doctor, which she practiced for 56 years, until she was age 75.
  • Elizabeth worked hard. While her husband Jacob was gone in the years 1853/54 to bring his mother and sisters to Utah, Elizabeth milked cows and made butter, which she was able to sell. Before Jacob returned she was able to pay off the $300 indebtedness they owed on their farm in South Cottonwood.
  • Catherine Maxwell
  • Catherine Maxwell, Jacob’s second wife came to Utah to marry another man. The young gentleman had helped pay for Catherine’s passage to Utah.
  • When she arrived in Salt Lake she found out that Brigham Young had advised the young man to marry someone else first, and then to marry Catherine as a second wife. Upon hearing this she is reported to have said, “I will not be the second wife to any man”
  • Apparently Jacob Mica Truman was not just “any man” for Catherine married Jacob just a few months later as his second wife.
  • George Boyce (Elizabeth’s father)
  • George Boyce was born in England. He immigrated to the U.S. shortly after his marriage to Ann Geldard.
  • George Boyce and Ann left Nauvoo with his children in the winter of 1846 and went to Winter Quarters.
  • They were in Bishop Miller's company and left Winter Quarters in the fall of 1846. They traveled into present day Nebraska, near the Niabraro River and resided with a band of Ponca Indians during the winter of 1846-1847. Ann died and was buried there, probably in February of 1847. They came back to Winter Quarters shortly after that.
  • George Boyce was the Captain of the fifth ten of the second 50 of the first 100 of the “Big Company”. His company, the second fifty, led by Parley P. Pratt was the first company of Saints from Winter Quarters to reach the Valley after the Pioneer Company in 1847. They entered the Valley on the 19th of Sept. 1847.
  • George Boyce married his second wife, Agnes Taylor (the sister of John Taylor, 3rd President of the Church by the shores of the Platte River, while traveling through Nebraska on their way to the Salt Lake Valley.

  • LUNCH
Families gathered together in family groups to eat and visit.  Dutch oven potatoes were furnished by Elton Hall.  Yummy!

    AUCTION
The auction was held after lunch.  Ashley Hall was the auctioneer.  The hit of the auction was a heritage quilt donated by the Ashley Hall family.  After lively bidding for the quilt, it was determined that the Hall family would make another quilt so both families bidding could buy one.  The auction was a financial success, adding to the family account to be used for genealogy research and other family projects.

When the reunion was over, all there expressed a “thank you” to the committee for a wonderful time.
