HISTORIES OF
HARRY HILL BOWLER &
HATTIE JANE CANFIELD

History of Harry Hill Bowler

Harry Hill Bowler was born April 1, 1865 in Leicester, England. He was the oldest child of Matilda Hill and James Samuel Page Bowler. There were eight other children born to this couple.

Harry’s parents were converts to the LDS Church and came to America in the year of 1880. He was sixteen years of age at the time. His father was encouraged and sponsered by Elder Zera P. Terry from Enterprise, Utah to come to the town of Hebron, Utah as they needed a music teacher and shoe-maker.

Harry was small in stature but very strong and hard working. He served a mission for the Church to the Southern States Mission in Texas. He was a farmer, rancher and had some cattle. He had one of the finest fruit orchards in Southern Utah. He peddled his delicious fruit to nearby towns such as Enterprise and St. George. This provided the needed cash to sustain his family and the ranch.

He married Hattie Jane Canfield in the St. George Temple on January 7, 1902. They lived their entire married life in Gunlock, Utah. There were six children born to this couple. They were Evaline, Golda Luella, Harry Lamond, Moroni, Irene and Laura Hill. Evaline and Irene died as babies. Evaline was eighteen months old when she died and Irene lived six weeks.

Harry was an honest hard working man. He and Hattie were always active and devoted to the Church. They both had good singing voices and sang in the ward choir that his father directed.

Hattie died as a result of pneumonia in August of 1945. Harry then moved to St. George and lived near his son Lamond until his death in November of 1952. They are both buried in the Gunlock Cemetery.
