John H. MCNEALY

JOHN H. McNEALY b. 2 FEB 1821, Virginia d. 7 MAY 1888, Sullivan County, Missouri
SALINA TUTTLE b. 13 DEC 1821, Virginia d. 20 FEB 1856, St. Charles County, Missouri
John H. McNealy moved to Lincoln County, Missouri from Pittsylvania County, Virginia sometime before 1839. A record of his marriage to Salina Tuttle on May 31, 1839, exists at the Troy County Court House in Lincoln County, Missouri.
They were enumerated in the 1840 census as having one male child under the age of 5 living in their household. The 1850 U. S. Census show John H. McNeely, age 25, Raftsman, living with Salina, age 23; John W. age 6; Thomas age 4; and James age 2. It is assumed that the child enumerated in the 1840 U. S. Census, had died before 1850.
The 1860 U. S. Census, shows John H. McNealy, age 39, Farmer, living with Virginia age 19; John W. age 17; Levi T. age 11; J. Chaney age 12; Sarah E. age 8; Missouri C. age 4; Lilley L. age 1 and a Farm Hand George O. Slay age 27.
Confusion came when I found the names of two of John's children enumerated in the 1850 U.S. Census different that in the 1860 U.S. Census Thomas in 1850 and Levi T. in 1860 and James in 1850 and J. Chaney in 1860. Also the addition of a young 19 year old wife who was only 2 years older than John's eldest son, John W.
Record of Tombstones at the Cuirve Township, St. Charles County, Missouri shows Salina J., wife of J. H. McNeley, died August 19, 1857. It is assumed John married Virginia sometime between 1857 and 1860. I have never located their marriage record.
The 1870 U.S. Census in Clark Township, Lincoln County, Missouri, showed Jno H. McNealy living with Virginia, age 28; L. Thomas, age 23; C. James, age 22; Sarah E., age 19*; Missouri C., age 17; William L., age 11**; Edward S., age 10; Joseph H., age ; David H., age ; Maria S., age ; and Robert A., age . A record in the 1870 U. S. Mortality Schedule of a Russel McNealy d. age 8/12 years in July of 1869. He could have been a twin to Robert?
Sometime after 1870, John McNealy, his wife, Virginia and their children moved to Sullivan County, Missouri. The 1880 U. S. Census show them residing in Jackson, Sullivan County, Missouri. Head of Household; J. H. McNealey age 59; Virginia, wife, age 30; Edward, son, age 19; Joseph H. son, age 17; David, son, age 15; Maria S. daughter, age 13: Robt. A., son, age 10; Nancy J., daughter, age 8; Geo. B., son, age 6; and Umatilla, daughter, age 4.
John McNealey died on May 7, 1888. He left a Will filed at the Sullivan County Courthouse, Missouri. His Will simply states "It is my will that my body have a decent and Christian burial and that my grave be marked by a suitable stone. "...all of the property that I now possess come by and through my wife, Virginia McNealey...to dispose of as she may with the request that she make my children by her equal as near as she can...." and "It is my will that my children by my first wife [wife not named] Thomas L. McNealey, James C. McNealey, Sarah E. Mills, Missouri C. Scott have nothing out of the estate for the reason that I have no property of my own except that acquired through my present wife."
"The Children that I request my wife to provide for are as follows, Lillie L. Murdock, Edward S. McNealey, Joseph H. McNealey, David H. McNealey, Mariah S. McNealley, Mary S. J. McNealey, George B. McNealey, Robert A. McNealey and Umatilla McNealey.
* Sarah E. was enumerated in the 1870 U. S. Census in her parents household as well as in Rolla Mills's household at the age 20., wife with two children John W., age 3 and Elizb. C., age 7/12 in Clarke Township, Lincoln County, Missouri page 30.
**The individual enumerated as William L., male, age 11, in the 1870 U. S. Census is the same person enumerated in the 1860 U.S. Census as Lillie L. female, age 1. (She was also listed on John H. McNealy's Will as Lillie L. Murdock.)
I have found John McNealy's name spelled in the following spellings: McNeely, McNealey, McNeilly.
