GETTING STARTED ~ GOOD LUCK

You'll need a web ready computer-any Windows, Macintosh or UNIX systems will do.

It's critical that you have a video monitor with 640x480 resolution or more and at least 256 bit color - preferably more and enough disk storage and high memory to run web-browsing software.

ISP

ISP stands for Internet service provider - such as Softcom, AOL, Earthlink, Mindspring etc... Next you'll need a connection to the internet using a modem with PPP (point to point protocol). Which connects your computer to your telephone. Your computer once hooked up properly transmits data through the phone line and receives data from your ISP with access speeds from 14,400, 28,800 to 56,000 kbps (kilobytes per second). Most ISP will provide members with complimentary web space 5-12MB (mega bytes). Which is where you will send your HTML (hypertext mark-up language) pages and associated media-audio, video, animation and graphics.

Your computer will need a Web Browser (Netscape Navigator http://www.netscape.com) or (Microsoft Internet Explorer http://www.microsoft.com) both are free and serve more than 90% of web surfers.

Last, surf the web and begin building a sense of what you like and don't like on other web pages. Then once you've determined what type of page you want to provide information about - Now the fun begins

HTML

HTML stands for hypertext mark-up language. H is the scripting language T is in text form M marks up a page with formatted command L language. The commands are then interpreted by the web browser and sent to your screen.

WEB BROWSER

WEB BROWSER (Netscape or Explorer) is a computer program that interprets HTML commands arranges them and displays the parts of a web page. The browser does more than retrieve a file and put it on a screen. It assembles the component parts of a page and arranges those parts according to the commands hidden < >in the text by the author. Those commands are written in HTML codes and stored in a file, which tell the browser what to do and where to get the attributes to produce the desired site.

WWW

WWW stands for World Wide Web, which is how all ISP, link with one another and transfer analog and digital language over your phone line.

WEB PAGE is a formatted site linked to an ISP or a Host Site and transferred when the address is entered into the Web Browser. Web pages can be for almost anything from personal to professional or business. Web sites contain information, graphics, audio, video, animation, and e-mail addresses and good old-fashioned text.

When viewing Web Pages it looks like paper pages. If the page is stored on a disk in your computer it appears almost instantly. If it is located on some other computer you will have to wait for it to be retrieved and loaded. As a web page author you will need to be aware of some of the differences between web pages and paper pages. What appears on your screen may be an assembly of elements located in many different computer files.

FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol is the standard that your file transfer software must adhere to when sending files from your computer to a remote Web server. Once you've FTP'd your files to a live server, the server then sends those files out to anyone who asks for them using the HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol). Every Web author needs to have an FTP (http://www.ipswitch.com).
