Will of Barnet Burton Dated 15 Jan 1823
Amelia County, Virginia Will Book No. 9, page 431

In the Name of God Amen. I, Barnet Burton being weak in body but of a sound and disposing mind do make this my last will and testament in the manner and form following to wit

Item first. It is my will and desire that my ---- ---- will be sold on a credit of one year at the end of this year and that my -- sell the balance of my Negroes soon as they think it advantageous to do so on .....

Item second. It is my will and desire that my exec employ a ---- young man jointly with Ben Bridgforth who shall -- as speedily as possible as much money due the ------ of ---- Bridgforth as will pay the debt of said ---- equally divided between Ben Bridgforth and my estate with ....

Item third. After -- my estate into money I wish my executors to -- one third of my estate .... arising from which I give to my wife during her -- life but should my -- insufficient to maintain her ....

... until my son William Alfred arrives to the age of twenty one and that they appropriate the interest coming from the ­- in the support my said son Wm. Alfred ----

Item the fifth. Should my son Wm. Alfred die ....

I appoint my brothers John and Peter Burton also my friend Herbert Reese my executors to -- this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of January 1823. Barnett Burton. Witnesses Wm. H. Robertson, Wm. Worsham, Thoms. H. Finney.

In Amelia County Court January 23 1823. This last will and testament of Barnett Burton deceased was exhibited unto court and proven by the oaths of three witnesses thereto subscribed and ordered to be recorded...
