I, Garner Mayes, of Amelia County do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say:
First, I desire that as much of my estate as can be best spared be immediately sold after my decease and out of the money arising therefrom be appropriated to the payment of my just debts.
2ndly I lend to my wife Judith Mayes the residue of my estate during her natural life for the purpose of maintaining and educating my children and after her decrease to be equally divided among the survivors of them.
And lastly I do hereby appoint my beloved wife Judith Mayes executrix and my friends William Burton Executor to this my last will and testament hereby re-- all other or former wills or testament by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this eight day of March in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and six. Signed Garner Mayes. Codicil to the last will and testament of Garner Mayes.
Item. It is my will and desire that my -- and executor within named as soon as they may think proper after my decease -- a Negro woman by the name of Hannah and her youngest child by the name of Sally for the purpose of raising a sum of money to purchase a tract of land intended for the benefit of my Judith Mayes during her life and at her decease to be sold and the money arising therefrom equally divided among my surviving children. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six.
