Sharing Family Files         pg.1

Over the years I have helped people use some of their computer programs to better advantage. Since I have become involved in genealogy research, I have been faced with a common problem, how to share family line information without compromising the privacy and security of living individuals. Many of us use Broderbund's Family Tree Makerâ, but if you share a line with someone, you share everything, unless you create only an outline to share, and then you still have pull out some info by hand, while the person you send it to has to type it all back in. Quite a laborious process - and frustrating when you are as bad a typist as I am.
I have now discovered automatic filtering software which works on the standard GEDCOM file (*.ged), a format almost any genealogy program can import.  Family Tree Makerâ can both import and export this file format, but many people find the instructions unclear. So I created this web page to walk you through the process of exporting a GEDCOM file, hoping it will be helpful.
The next page discusses an automatic filtering program called Res Privataâ.
A third page will have instructions for importing a GEDCOM file into Family Tree Makerâ.

Before you create your files to share, you will probably want to create a new folder on your hard drive to store them in. If you are unsure how to create a new folder click here.

If this has been useful, or you feel it needs improvement, with your comments. (It may take a while to load as there are so many pictures to help you)

To export a family line from Broderbund's  Family Tree Makerâ in Gedcom format:
1) Select the card for the primary ancestor. 2) Go to the View menu to create an outline.
3) Go to the Contents menu to select the number of generations included in the outline.
4) Go to File Menu and choose Copy/Export individuals in Outline descendent tree.
5) Then choose GEDCOM (*.GED) from the drop down box for Save as Type and type a name in the File Name box above it and click on the Save button. Then choose the OK button in the Export to GEDCOM dialog box.

The Gedcom file has now been created. Remember where you saved it so that you can send it to someone , or use a program like RES PRIVATA to remove all notes, sources, dates of living individuals and other info before you send it.
