Sharing Family Files         pg.2

Res Privataâ is a program designed to allow you to remove "private" data from GEDCOM (*.ged) files you wish to share with others. After testing several programs, it has the best combination of power and ease of use that I have presently found. The program is currently free to individual users and may be downloaded from several sites including : http://members.ozemail.com.au/~naibor/rpriv.html.

Using Res Privataâ:
The program has built in help that is quite good and should be used as a tutorial. The material I am providing on the use of Res Privataâ is merely being presented to highlight its simplicity.

1) After you start Res Privataâ, click on the Set Options button.

2) Then go to the Birth/Death page to set what dates you want removed, and how to do it. Repeat the process on the Marriage/Divorce and Adoption pages.

3) Go to the Other page and click to check or uncheck on additional information you wish to withhold.

4) To finish setting up the options, go to the Files page.
a) Click on the folder icon to open a file dialog box to chose the GED file to filter.
b) Then click on the folder icon to open a file dialog box to find where you want to save the filtered file, and type in a name for the new file. ( the glasses icon opens up an editor so you can review or make changes by hand)
c) Click on the disk icon to save your changes, or on the  folder icon to open a file dialog box to to save your changes under a different file name.

5) Finally, close the Options Dialog box and click on Filter GED file button to let the program do its work.

That's It! Just remember where you saved the file so you can copy it to a floppy or attach it to an e-mail message to send to someone.

disclaimer - I have no association with the developers of Res Privataâ, and my recommendation of their product is only as an individual who has found it useful.  Above I have provided a link to the developer's site as a convenience so you can download the program. If the link does not work (or you find a better program), please so I can try to update it.
