Zimbabwean talks fail to produce agreement
HARARE, Zimbabwe, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Two days of negotiations
over a power-sharing accord in Zimbabwe ended without an agreement,
the country's main opposition party said.
Movement for Democratic Change spokesman Nelson Chamisa said
the balance of power was in dispute, the BBC reported Sunday.
The the opposition party held negotiations with the ruling
Zanu-PF party in South Africa.
Chamisa said longtime President Robert Mugabe wanted MDC
leader Morgan Tsvangirai to become a titular prime minister without
real authority.
Tsvangirai beat Mugabe in a March 29 election but fell short
of enough votes to avoid a run-off vote. The opposition leader
withdrew from the race citing threats against him and his
supporters.
Last week, Mugabe threatened to form a new government
without the opposition.
"The MDC does not want to come in apparently," he said
Wednesday.
In March's legislative elections, Mugabe's Zanu-PF party
lost its majority in the House of Assembly for the first time since
independence in 1980.
