Journalism student raped at immigrant camp
CALAIS, France, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Police say a British
journalism student was gang-raped by illegal immigrants living in a
Calais, France, squatters camp.
The unidentified student, in her 20s or early 30s, had said
she wanted to talk with would-be asylum seekers trying to cross the
English Channel, The Daily Mail reported Thursday.
About 100 men have been arrested by French authorities for
questioning about the crime committed in an abandoned area of the
port known as "The Jungle."
"She appeared to be working alone, which was clearly a very
dangerous thing to do," said a police spokesman. "We fear that the
men she was reporting on attacked her in the wood where they were
staying."
"There are lots of journalists, including students, who come
here to get to the heart of what's going on, to write reports and
produce films," the Rev. Jean-Pierre Boutoille, of the refugee
charity C'Sur, told The Daily Mail.
Boutoille said he didn't recall the young woman, saying:
"When reporters contact us, we always ask to accompany them. We know
the refugees as we see them every day. We would never allow a young
female adventurer in this wood, especially not at night."
