Report: Kenya leaders incited riots
NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Five members of the Kenyan
Cabinet and other leaders planned the violence that followed the
national elections, a report said.
The Waki Commission ruled this week that the Kenyan National
Commission on Human Rights report on the violence can be published,
The Nation reported. But the names of those blamed for the violence
cannot be released.
More than 1,000 people were killed and 300,000 driven from
their homes after the disputed Dec. 27 election. Both President Mwai
Kibaki and Raile Odinga, leader of the opposition, claimed victory.
Organizers used fake harambees, the traditional Kenyan
self-help groups, to incite violence, the report said. It says 200
people are responsible, including the ministers, five religious
leaders, eight provincial administrators and 13 members of
parliament.
Members of the Party of National Unity and Odinga's Orange
Democratic Movement were implicated.
One minister allegedly held a meeting in August for members
of his ethnic group to plan the removal of members of other groups.
Another allegedly sheltered violent young people at his house and
incited them to block a highway.
